How to change Nissan Titan power steering fluid

If you’d like to save yourself a serious chunk of change, you can avoid the cost of a mechanic’s labor and change your Dodge Nitro’s power steering fluid from home.
Before you begin your DIY maintenance, be prepared with the right
tools and supplies
on hand:
  • A suction device (a vacuum pump, syringe, or a turkey baster will work!)
  • Power steering fluid or ATF for your vehicle
  • Rag or cotton towel
  • A rubber cap to cover the reservoir
  • A container for the used fluid
  • A funnel
To change your Nissan Titan power steering fluid, follow the steps below:
Step 1: Remove the old power steering fluid with your syringe. If excess fluid remains in the reservoir, unplug the reservoir’s return hose and drain the remaining fluid into the container.
Step 2:  Using your funnel, fill the reservoir with the new power steering fluid.
Step 3: Turn on the engine and move your wheel back and forth to empty any remaining fluid from the reservoir.
Step 4: Continue to fill the reservoir with new fluid until red, clean fluid comes out of the hose.
Step 5: Turn off the vehicle, remove the rubber cap and plug the hose back in.
And there you have it—new power steering fluid in your reservoir! Once you’ve completed all five steps, check for any leaks underneath your vehicle. Finally, if everything looks good, take your Nissan for a quick drive to ensure your steering feels smooth.

What is the power steering fluid change interval for a Nissan Titan?

You should change the fluid in your Nissan Titan every 40,000 miles or every 3-4 years—whichever comes first.
However, you may need to change it sooner if you experience any symptoms of contaminated power steering fluid, including:
  • Difficulty steering
  • A stiff steering wheel
  • A loose steering wheel
  • Groaning noises coming from under the hood
  • You notice brown or black power steering fluid in the reservoir (fluid should be clear pink or amber)
