Nissan Altima Tire Pressure

Correct Nissan Altima tire pressure is 32 psi in most cases—but what happens if your tire pressure monitoring system is malfunctioning?

background
The recommended tire pressure for a Nissan Altima is 32 pounds per square inch (PSI) for both front and rear tires.
It’s unsafe to drive with improperly inflated tires. If the air pressure is too low or too high, your vehicle cannot keep you safe. You may notice a reduced ability to steer and worse fuel efficiency. There’s a higher risk of a blowout, too.
To stay safe—and save money by avoiding unexpected incidents—keep your Nissan Altima tire pressure where it’s supposed to be. Here’s a quick guide from

What is the right tire pressure for a Nissan Altima?

For most unmodified Nissan Altimas, the recommended tire pressure is 32 psi for both front and rear tires
Look in your owner’s manual to confirm this number. The proper PSI should also be listed on a sticker on the driver’s side door frame.
If you drive a higher-level trim Altima, such as the Altima SL, Altima SR, or Altima SV, the recommended PSI for both front and rear tires is 33 psi.
Be aware that high-performance tires or non-stock tires may require a different tire pressure, up to 51 psi. If you have made any modifications to your Altima’s wheels or tires, make sure to consult the product manufacturer’s guidelines for tire pressure.

How to check Nissan Altima tire pressure

In newer model years of the Nissan Altima, low tire pressure in any one tire (except the spare tire) will trigger a display in your instrument cluster. This Easy Fill display lets you check the tire pressure on all four tires.
If you drive an older Altima, that’s okay! It’s really easy to check tire pressure the old-fashioned way. You will need a
tire pressure gauge
, which you can find for sale at most gas stations and auto supply shops.
To check Nissan Altima tire pressure, remove the valve stem cap on a single tire. Push the gauge onto the valve stem. Read the number on the stick thrust outward by the air pressure.
If you need to add air, drive to a gas station with an air-filling station. Most of these stations have a tire pressure gauge for you to use while filling your tires.
Even if you don’t have a tire gauge, there are some subtle signs you should look out for which may indicate that your tires might have low pressure. Uneven steering, an unbalanced driving experience, or poor performance are strong signs that something’s wrong with the tire pressure.

How often should you check tire pressure?

Experts recommend that you check your tire pressure once per month, or every other time you fill up your tank with gas. It’s wise to check tire pressure before you take a long road trip, too.

How to tell if your Nissan Altima needs new tires

Your Altima’s tires should last about five years, depending on your climate and driving habits.
You should examine your tires regularly for cracks, wear, and odd bulges. It only takes a minor defect to trigger a major blowout or accident.
Use the penny trick to check tread depth. Stick a penny into the tire tread with the top of President Lincoln’s head aiming directly down into the tire. If you can see the top of the head, your tread is too worn out to be safe—get new tires!

How to reset the Nissan Altima tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) light

Sometimes the warning light stays illuminated even after you have properly filled the tires. To turn the light off, you may need to
reset your TPMS
If you need to recalibrate or reset your tire pressure monitoring system, here are the steps to do so.
First, drive at or above 50 mph for at least 10 minutes. This resets the sensor
Now, with the vehicle turned off, locate the TPMS reset button (it’s usually beneath the steering wheel). Then, move the key in the ignition to the ON position but do not start your car. Hold down the TPMS reset button until the light on your dashboard blinks three times. Let go of the button.
Start the car and wait 20 minutes to see if the light goes off.
If this does not work, there’s another option. Some drivers have success by intentionally overinflating the tires to three PSI above the recommended amount before deflating them completely. Then, reinflate all tires to their proper PSI and see if the light goes off.
If you try these tactics and nothing works, bring your Altima to an auto shop or Nissan dealer for assistance.
