Here’s a list of everything you’ll need to get the gasoline smell out of your clothes:

 Tools

  • Paper towels
  • Bucket or tub
  • Washing machine
  • Soft scrub brush

Cleaning agents

  • Baking soda
  • Stain remover spray
  • Dish soap
  • Laundry detergent
  • Vinegar
  • Ammonia
  • Orange cleaner

Five steps to get rid of the gasoline smell on your clothes

Follow these five simple steps to get the gasoline smell out of your clothes:

Step one: blot the stain

Before using cleaning agents to get the stain out of your clothing, blot the stain with paper towels to get rid of any excess gasoline in your clothes. Use baking soda to dry up any last drops and safely dispose of the paper towels and baking soda.

Step two: spray the stain

Use a stain remover spray like OxiClean or Spray ‘n Wash to break down the gasoline and petroleum. Let the spray sit for at least 15 minutes, and then throw your clothes in the washing machine at the hottest setting to get rid of the stain and smell.
You may be able to stop at this step if your clothes come out of the wash without a gasoline smell.

Step three: treat the stain with laundry detergent or dish soap

If your clothes come out of the wash still smelling like gasoline, treat the stain with laundry detergent, dish soap, or baking soda. Scrub the stain with two tablespoons of dish soap or laundry detergent for five minutes before soaking it in hot water for 30 minutes.
If you’d like to use baking soda, mix two parts baking soda with one part water and rub the mixture on the stain. Let it dry and brush the mixture off, repeating if necessary.

Step four: treat any lingering smell with vinegar or ammonia

If your clothes still smell like gasoline, soak your clothing in equal parts vinegar and water for at least 30 minutes. Repeat the soak if needed.
If your clothing is heavily soiled in gasoline and still has a strong smell, you can soak it in one cup of non-sudsing ammonia and water. This mixture has an unpleasant odor, so we recommend soaking your clothes in a washing machine with a lid to seal off the smell
Pro tip Do not mix bleach with vinegar or ammonia. Either mixture will create chlorine and chloramine fumes, which are toxic.

Step five: if all else fails, use orange cleaner

If none of the above steps have worked, try using an orange cleaner like Orange Glo's Orange Clean Pro. You can add it directly to the washwith your clothing to help break down any lingering smells.
