Overview: what is a Land Rover extended warranty?

When you buy a new Land Rover, a factory warranty (or limited warranty) is usually included in the cost. This basic warranty guarantees that necessary repairs or replacements caused by manufacturer error will be covered for a certain number of years or miles.
Land Rover’s new vehicle factory warranty lasts up to four years or 50,000 miles. It covers a limited list of mechanical and electrical components, and may also include 24/7 roadside assistance, trip-interruption expense benefits, and six-year corrosion perforation coverage (with unlimited mileage).
In most cases, Land Rover’s extended warranty adds three years or 50,000 miles of coverage to the factory warranty for new cars and protects a wider range of mechanical and electrical components. On top of the standard factory warranty, this amounts to seven years or 100,000 miles of comprehensive coverage.
If you’re buying a used Land Rover, you can also extend the factory warranty through a CPO warranty (for certified pre-owned vehicles). Although it’s not always item-for-item, this t offers the same coverage as the limited warranty and will last for up to seven years or 100,000 miles from the vehicle’s original sale.

Land Rover Vehicle Protection Plan: coverage and cost

Not only do the prices for Land Rover’s extended warranty vary depending on your Land Rover model, but they also vary by dealership. Total costs tend to land upwards of $5,000, but you may find that negotiating with more than one dealer will help you find the best price available.
Unlike some other makes’ extended warranties, like Ford’s four-tiered extended service plan, Land Rover’s extended warranty is limited to one comprehensive coverage plan. This includes both bumper-to-bumper and powertrain protection for up to seven years or 100,000 miles of coverage.
Here are some more coverage and cost factors to consider:
  • Financing: Monthly financing options are available through lender programs specific to your dealer.
  • Deductibles: Repairs performed at facilities other than a U.S. Land Rover retailer will likely have a $100 deductible (your taxes, labor costs, and repair fees are typically covered).
  • It’s transferable: Should you decide to sell your Land Rover at any point during the coverage term, your extended warranty will transfer—increasing your resale value.
  • After-purchase add-ons: In most cases, you can add an extended warranty to your factory warranty after the initial purchase. However, some dealers have mileage limitations, and most will only extend seven years past the original sale.

What’s covered

Almost every mechanical component of your Land Rover is covered under the Land Rover extended warranty, so long as the repair or replacement is due to defective or poor workmanship
That said, covered items vary depending on the service agreement you sign with your specific dealership. You can generally expect your extended warranty to take care of the following:
  • Engine: all internally-lubricated parts (powertrain control unit, turbochargers/superchargers, clutch, crankshaft, main bearings, pistons, pins, rings, connecting rods, bearings, etc.)
  • Transmission (manual, automatic, and 4WD): all internally-lubricated parts within cases, as well as some other parts (like the torque converter, internal linkage, transmission mounts, dipstick, filler tube, and vacuum modulator)
  • Drive Axle: all internally-lubricated parts within differential, transaxle, or final drive housing in the front or rear
  • Steering: all internally-lubricated parts plus the gear housing (rack, pinion, shafts, power steering pump, etc.)
  • AC: air-conditioner compressor, electrical HVAC actuators, clutch (pulleys and coils), etc.
  • Heating/Cooling: thermostat, radiator, water pump, coolant recovery unit, fan shroud, fan controller module, etc.
  • Electrical: ignition switch, ignition coil, distributor, starter, alternator, voltage regulator, wiring harness, solenoids, etc.
  • Braking: disc calipers, master cylinder, wheel cylinders, combination valves, power assist booster, hydraulic lines, fittings, etc.
  • Suspension: mounting plates, struts, retainer and bushing, upper and lower control arms, control arm shafts, and bushings
  • Fuel delivery and exhaust: fuel injectors, metal, and plastic fuel lines, fuel tank, fuel pump, fuel tank sending unit, catalytic converter, diesel injection systems
  • Driver assistance technology: blind-spot monitors, infotainment systems, navigation systems, rear monitoring systems, hands-free systems, keyless access systems, voice recognition, etc.
Land Rover’s extended warranty also implements the limited warranty’s 24/7 roadside assistance, fuel delivery services, and trip-interruption reimbursement benefits. That means you’re covered for a rental car, food, and hotel costs if your Land Rover breaks down 50 miles or more from home. You will also receive complimentary emergency towing services to the nearest Land Rover retailer anytime.
While some car brands detail their extended warranty policies on their websites, Land Rover’s extended warranty specs can only be found through dealerships directly. It’s worth noting that extended warranties will vary in terms of coverage and costs depending on which Land Rover dealer you get it from.

What isn’t

Even with the variation between dealerships, there are a few repairs and replacements almost every Land Rover extended warranty won’t cover. These include:
  • Wear and tear: Any damages or adjustments that aren’t caused by manufacturer defects won’t be covered under any warranty (this includes wheel alignments and non-perforative rust damage).
  • Routine maintenance
: Since Land Rover offers prepaid maintenance plans to help cover ongoing maintenance in advance (like oil and filter changes and multi-point inspections), these costs aren’t covered in your extended warranty policy.
  • Damages from accidents or severe weather events: Incidental damages usually fall under insurance coverage. For accidents and weather, you’ll need
    collision insurance
    comprehensive insurance
    in addition to your basic
    liability insurance
  • Listed exclusions: Land Rover’s extended warranty policies mention specific components that aren’t covered, and you’ll have to refer to the “Exclusions” section of your agreement to pinpoint them.
Much like what your extended warranty does cover, the exclusions from your coverage will vary with each Land Rover model and dealer. Certain dealers offer individual protection plans to cover damages that are in addition to the extended warranty, including the following:
  • Interior appearance protection: extracts or repairs interior stains (including those from make-up, food, and beverages), UV fading and discoloration, dashboard cracks, punctures, rips and tears, and upholstery burns
  • Guaranteed Auto Protection (or
    GAP insurance
): covers the cost difference between your market payout and ongoing loan expenses in the event of a total loss
  • Dent repairs: removes dings and dents without impacting the paint finish
  • Tire and wheel protection: repairs and replaces tires damaged by road hazards
  • Key protection: replaces keys and key fobs that are lost or stolen
As with any warranty, your Land Rover extended warranty doesn’t cover damages caused by aftermarket parts either—these will void it. While it’s legal to install aftermarket parts to your Land Rover without voiding your warranty (thanks to the Magnuson-Moss Act), it’s also perfectly legal for Land Rover to void your warranty if those parts negatively impact any components of your vehicle.

Land Rover’s extended warranty typically covers up to seven years or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first). In other words, you’ll get an additional three years and an extra 50,000 miles added to your four-year, standard limited warranty coverage.
That said, term lengths can vary on a case-by-case basis. Factors like your dealer, model type, vehicle age, state and location all impact your Land Rover extended warranty coverage terms and protection. Information regarding Land Rover’s extended warranty duration (and coverage terms in general) is limited because of this.
Compared to brands like Kia and Volkswagen offering warranty options that last up to 10 years or 150,000 miles, Land Rover’s extended warranty coverage may seem short-lived. Compared to other luxury SUV brands’ warranties, though, Land Rover stacks up nicely.

Land Rover extended warranty costs are subject to the same variations as coverage and duration. Generally, you can expect to pay at least $5,000 for a three-year extension to the standard four-year factory warranty—which amounts to about $1,700 per year of extended warranty coverage.
Of course, your Land Rover extended warranty may still cost more than this. When considering cost variations by state, dealership, and vehicle, you’ll likely find your extended warranty price to land between $1,200 and $2,500 per year
Compared to other makes, Land Rover extended warranty costs run on the higher end. While this is expected with a more expensive vehicle, ConsumerAffairs reports that average total prices for an extended warranty plan only cost up to $2,500
If you’re hunting for a bargain on your Land Rover’s warranty, you may want to look into third-party warranty options online.

Is it worth getting a Land Rover extended warranty?

The Land Rover extended warranty isn’t perfect. For one, it’s costly, and its duration and options are limited—especially compared to non-luxury brands like Ford and Kia.
That said, Land Rovers aren’t perfect either. They’re far from it: RepairPal estimates that Land Rover drivers pay an average of $1,174 per year on maintenance and repairs. Similarly, Land Rover took last place in J.D. Power’s
U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study
in 2020, 2021, and 2022.
Having an extended warranty, despite the cost, may bring peace of mind considering Land Rover’s track record of recalls and defects. If the price is outside your budget, you can always negotiate with more than one dealer or consider purchasing from third-party warranty companies.
Another alternative is to buy
mechanical breakdown insurance
(MBI) through your insurance provider. Much like an extended warranty, MBI insurance covers the costs of repairing mechanical damages not caused by wear and tear. As an extra perk, MBI coverage isn’t managed by the dealer either, so profit incentive is much less of a concern.
