background
A Honda Fit’s oil capacity is between 3.5 and 3.8 quarts depending on the year of your vehicle, so having four quarts on hand is necessary. Also, be sure to change the filter when changing the oil.
In 2020, US World and News Report ranked the Honda Fit #1 among subcompact cars, citing its “fun ride and great fuel economy.” There’s no doubt that the Fit is a great commuter car, and most owners want to keep their cars on the road for as long as possible.
One of the easiest things you can do to prolong the life of your engine is to commit to regular oil changes.

Honda Fit engine oil capacity.

Depending on your model year, the Honda Fit’s 1.5L 4-cylinder engine oil capacity ranges from 3.5 to 3.8 quarts of SAE 5W-20 synthetic motor oil.
This means you want to buy at least 4 quarts of oil if you are going to embark upon a DIY oil change.
You’ll likely find that it is less expensive to buy a 5-quart jug rather than to buy motor oil by the quart. You can keep the extra oil for your next oil change.
Pay attention when the manufacturer recommends you use 5W-20 oil. This is intentional, and you shouldn’t stray from the recommendation.
After SAE, the first number (in this case, 5) refers to the viscosity (thickness) of the oil when you first start your car in cold temperatures. The second number that comes after the hyphen (in this case, 20) indicates the oil’s viscosity when the engine has reached its usual running temperature, which usually takes 20-30 minutes.

What kind of oil does a  Honda Fit need?

Your next question might be, should I buy conventional or synthetic oil?
While you might be tempted to go with conventional (it’s usually cheaper), Honda’s engineers recommend that Fit owners use synthetic oil.
Why do so many people choose synthetic oil now? It has to do with the quality of the oil
First, synthetics keep your engine cleaner because they have fewer impurities than conventional motor oil, which is a plus.
Second, they have better viscosity than conventional oil. This means they flow better when it's cold and resist heat when temperatures are warm.
Third, you can go longer between oil changes when you use synthetic oil.
So let’s assume that you’re going to buy synthetic oil. Here are some top recommendations for 5W-20 synthetic oil:
When buying the motor oil, be sure to also buy a new filter. Typically, Fit owners pay a bit under $20 for a good-quality filter.

How often to change oil on a  Honda Fit

Back in the day with conventional oil, the rule of thumb was to change your oil every 3,500 to 5,000 miles. However, using synthetic oil means you can likely extend this to 7,500-10,000 miles between oil changes.
However, most experts don’t recommend going quite so long, particularly if your car is older and has high mileage. If your beloved commuter car has a lot of miles (as in 75,000 or more), don’t go any more than 5,000 miles between oil changes.
People often ask why older cars or cars with high mileage on them need more frequent oil changes. In short, it all comes down to engine wear.
Look for these signs that may indicate your Fit needs an oil change:

How to change your oil and oil filter

If you’ve decided to change the oil in your Honda Fit yourself, you’ll want to assemble the following:
  • 4-5 quarts of SAE 5W-20 synthetic oil
  • A  Honda Fit oil filter with new washer
  • Jack stand (or Rhino ramps) and wheel chocks to secure your Fit
  • Drain pan (for used oil) and paper towels and cardboard to protect your garage floor from used oil
  • Ratchet to unscrew the drain plug
  • New crush washer for re-installing the drain plug
  • Oil funnel to pour in new oil
First, run your engine for about five minutes if the engine is cold. Then, park your Fit in a level area. Shut off the engine and put it in park with the emergency brake on. Then:
  • After placing wheel chocks behind the rear wheels, jack up the front of your Fit so that you can slide underneath easily.
  • Place the cardboard on the ground and use it to slide underneath your car. The piece of cardboard should be big enough to protect the concrete from oil stains.
  • Place your oil collection bucket underneath the drain bolt. Then unscrew the bolt with the ratchet or wrench.Allow the oil to drain into the pan.
  • Let the oil drain out completely. Replace the drain bolt using a new crush washer. Tighten to the torque spec
  • Install the new filter and washer. Using the funnel, pour in the new oil.
  • Replace the oil fill cap.
To check for leaks, start your Fit’s engine and let it run for a few minutes. Turn off the engine. Now, look under the car to see if you see any fresh oil stains. Using the dipstick, check your oil level. If you need to add a bit more oil, do so.
Dispose of the used oil from your Fit responsibly. Fortunately, most states mandate that auto parts stores and mechanics must accept used motor oil. Call around to see who will be able to accept your used oil and take it there.
