2006 Toyota Corolla engine oil capacity

So how much engine oil do you need for a 2006 Toyota Corolla? The 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine under the hood has an oil capacity of 4.4 quarts, or 4.2 liters.
The 1.8-liter accompanying the engine type represents its displacement—or the amount of space it takes up. The oil capacity is strictly 4.4 quarts, and this is how much oil you’ll need to perform a full oil change.

What kind of oil does a 2006 Toyota Corolla need?

On top of knowing how much oil you will need in a 2006 Toyota Corolla, you’ll also need to know what type of oil to buy. Toyota recommends that you use Toyota Genuine SAE 5W-30 Full-Synthetic motor oil. This is important to keep in mind, as using the wrong oil can lead to engine damage caused by improper lubrication.
Let’s break down what 5W-30 Full-Synthetic oil means: The numbers represent the viscosity of the oil, or how thick it is.  The first number, 5, represents the oil's thickness at 0°F—denoted by the “W”, which stands for winter. The second number, 30, represents the oil's thickness at 212° F, or 100° C.
This low viscosity will help your engine perform well in cold weather, and lead to less wear on your engine.
When looking for the right oil for your Toyota Corolla, though, the manufacturer has two recommendations:
  • Straight from the source: Follow the owner’s manual recommendation and use Toyota Genuine SAE 5W-30 Full-Synthetic motor oil.
  • Alternative recommendation: If SAE 5W-30 is not available, Toyota recommends using SAE 10W-30 engine oil and replacing it with SAE 5W-30 at the next oil change

How often to change oil on a 2006 Toyota Corolla

Aside from oil capacity and type, one of the most important things to know about changing the oil in your 2006 Toyota Corolla is, of course, how often you need to do it
Toyota recommends changing your oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles or every six months—if you don’t drive very much. However, many experts say that full synthetic oil, like that recommended for the Toyota Corolla, only needs to be replaced every 7,500 to 10,000 miles
To know exactly when your oil needs to be changed, there are some tell-tale signs to pay attention to. Look out for the following:
  • Motor oil that is dark brown or black
  • Motor oil that feels coarse or gritty
  • Unfamiliar noises coming from the engine
  • New smells like oil, smoke, or burning
  • Changes in your vehicle’s performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

When it is time to change your oil, there are a few things you’ll need to gather up in addition to your oil. You will need:
  • A socket wrench
  • A drain pan
  • A filter wrench
  • Replacement filter
  • 4.4 quarts of premium 5W-30 engine oil
Run the engine for a while to get the car up to normal operating temperature. Then, shut the engine off, pop the hood, and get started.
  • Remove the oil fill cap.
  • Locate the oil drain bolt and washer underneath the engine, remove them, then drain the old oil into the drain pan.
  • Take out the old oil filter as you continue to let the oil drain.
  • Place the new filter in.
  • Put the oil drain bolt back in, and secure it with a new washer.
  • Using the new oil, refill the engine and replace the fill cap.
Use your dipstick to check that you’ve added enough oil. You’ll also want to run the engine for a few minutes to make sure there are no leaks. If everything is good to go, you should see that your dashboard’s
oil pressure light
has turned off.
You can put the dirty oil in a sealed container and bring that to a nearby recycling center. Just make sure you don’t dump the dirty oil on the ground where it can find its way into the sewage system and cause clogs, or throw it into the garbage where it may cause contamination.
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
