Ford Expedition check charge system: what does it mean?

When the “Check Charge System” light turns on on a Ford Expedition, this indicates an issue with the SUV’s charging system. This system is made up of the alternator, battery, and electronic control unit (ECU), along with wiring connections to keep all parts together.
This warning light doesn’t necessarily mean you require a new battery—it could just be that you need to change out a fuse or replace the alternator belt. But if the check charge system light is on, then your Expedition is possibly running on a limited battery charge and could completely lose power unless you take it to the repair shop as soon as possible

Common causes of charging system problems

So what’s the deal with your check charging system light popping up? Here are some of the most common causes why this warning light gets triggered on a Ford Expedition.

Bad alternator

Sometimes when your car battery is giving you issues, it’s
the alternator
that’s to blame.
The alternator sends power to your vehicle’s electrical system and charges your battery as you drive as well. So if you have a faulty alternator on your hands, you could experience a total loss of battery power before you know it. You’ll know your alternator is at fault if your Expedition runs shortly after
a jumpstart
and then dies on you again.

Battery problems

If your alternator checks out, then you might have a bad battery instead. The
Ford Expedition battery
lasts between four and seven years, so it might be about that time if your battery has reached this mark.
But make sure to check your battery cables and
battery terminals
before you head out to purchase a new battery. A loose connection or corrosion could also be the cause of your battery light turning on—not to mention a much easier repair than switching out your whole battery.

Drive belt issues

Do your alternator and battery look good? Then another possible explanation of why your charge system light is illuminating could be an issue with the
serpentine belt
. This belt powers the alternator, but it’s also prone to normal wear and tear like any part. If the serpentine belt is worn or faulty, this affects how your alternator is charging your Expedition’s battery, if at all.

Wires, fuses, and connections

If your Expedition’s electrical system is giving you problems at any point, you should also consider examining the fuse box and any wiring connections to see if there’s any possible wiring issue. In this case, then you’d probably be experiencing other issues with various car components too, like your brake lights.

Faulty ECU

If all car components above don’t seem to be the issue, then the check charge light on a Ford Expedition could be a computer-related problem. While it’s not as common as the other causes listed above, a failing electronic control unit (ECU) can set off both the battery light and check engine light.

How to reset the check charging system on a Ford Expedition

In a perfect world, resetting this warning light all on your own would be as easy as pie. But in reality, it signifies that there’s an issue with your Expedition’s charging system. That means you have to get the entire charging system checked out before this light can disappear.
To turn the check charging system light off, take your Expedition to a Ford dealership or a reputable mechanic to receive a proper diagnosis. If you’re looking for ways to save on costs, then consider using aftermarket parts and opting for an independent repair shop.

Can I drive with a charging system warning light?

If your battery isn’t already completely drained, you could technically drive your Ford Expedition for short distances—but don’t expect it to last too long. Sooner or later, charging system issues could cause your vehicle to lose power without warning. You might get left stranded or cause a horrific accident depending on the circumstances.
Once you notice the “Check Charge System” light appearing on your Expedition, take your SUV to an auto repair shop right away. It’s always a good idea to have a portable battery charger and jumper cables on hand in case you need to jump-start along the way.
