2021 Ram 6.4 engine oil capacity

Before even thinking about changing your 2021 Ram 6.4’s oil, you’ll need to know how much oil is required for its powerful 6.4 liter, 8-cylinder engine. Your Ram has a whopping oil capacity of 7 quarts of oil.
It’s important to note that your car’s oil capacity is not the same thing as its engine displacement, which in this case is the 6.4-liter volume its cylinders take up. Your oil capacity is how much oil your Ram requires at each oil change. Make sure to never mix these numbers up, as they aren’t interchangeable!

What kind of oil does a 2021 Ram 6.4 need?

Once you understand how much oil your Ram 6.4 needs for each oil change, it’s time to head to the auto shop and pick out the type of oil your truck needs. Not every car requires the same type of oil, so knowing the recommended kind of oil is crucial.
A 2021 Ram 6.4 requires premium full-synthetic 0W-40 engine oil to ensure its engine functions properly. What do these numbers and letters mean though? Let’s break it down.
The numbers in the oil grade refer to the oil’s viscosity—i.e. how thick it is—while the “W” stands for winter. The number 0 right before the W tells us that this oil has a low viscosity and flows smoothly through your car at low outside temperatures. Finally, the 40 refers to its low viscosity and high temperature at your engine’s normal operating temperature.
Simply put, you’re on the hunt for oil that works well in colder weather conditions and has a low viscosity, which means less wear and tear on your engine.
Here are our top two picks for motor oil that fits the correct specifications for your 2021 Ram 6.4:

How often to change the oil on a 2021 Ram 6.4

Even though Rams use full synthetic oil that lasts longer than conventional oil, the Ram 6.4 has a large, powerful engine that requires more upkeep than a smaller vehicle does. For this reason, it’s best to change your Ram’s oil every six months or 6,000 miles—whichever comes first.
If you drive your Ram frequently and use it for hauling large loads or towing, you may need to replace your truck’s oil more frequently than the suggested timeframe. Stay on top of your oil levels by checking your oil every other time you fill your Ram’s tank.  Look out for the following signs that your oil needs to be changed:
  • Motor oil that needs changing is dark brown or black (Clean oil is light brown or amber, like a cup of tea. Dirty oil is like a cup of soda.)
  • Motor oil feels coarse or gritty
  • Unfamiliar noises coming from the engine
  • New smells, especially anything that smells like oil, smoke, or burning
  • Changes in your vehicle’s performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

It’s easy to change your 2021 Ram 6.4’s oil from the comfort of your driveway. Here’s what you’ll need to do the job:
  • 13mm wrench
  • Oil filter
  • Funnel
  • Oil drain pan
  • Clean rag
  • Premium full-synthetic 0W-40 engine oil
Once you’ve gathered your tools and materials, you’re ready to get started. Follow this step-by-step guide to change your Ram’s oil at home:
  1. Park your truck on a level spot and warm the engine to its operating temperature.
  2. Pop the hood and remove the engine oil fill cap.
  3. Loosen the oil drain plug using the 13mm wrench. Place the drain pan under the plug hole and drain out all the old engine oil.
  4. Remove the oil filter, which is located to the right of the crank pulley on the front of the engine.
  5. Spin on the new engine oil filter after you’ve wiped down the oil filter fittings.
  6. Replace and tighten the oil drain plug with your wrench.
  7. Use the funnel to fill your engine with 7 quarts of new engine oil. Screw the cap back on.
  8. Start the engine to let the engine oil circulate and ensure your engine is running smoothly. Turn off your truck after a few minutes.
  9. Check the engine oil level with your dipstick and top it off if you need to.
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
If you’ve done the job correctly, your oil pressure dash light should turn off and your engine should run smoothly. Don’t dispose of your old oil in your garbage or dump it out onto the ground. Instead, put it in a sealed container and bring it to your nearest recycling center.
