2020 Jeep Compass engine oil capacity

The 2.4-L four-cylinder engine in the 2020 Jeep Compass has an oil capacity of 5.5 quarts or 5.2 liters. This is how much engine oil you’ll need every time you
change the oil and filter
in your Compass.
But where do the 2.4 liters in the engine description come into play, you might be wondering. This is the amount of volume your engine’s cylinders take up—also known as the
engine displacement
. This is not interchangeable with oil capacity, so make sure you’re still using a full 5.5 quarts or 5.2 liters every time you change your Compass’s oil.

What kind of oil does a 2020 Jeep Compass need?

Unfortunately, you can’t go to the store and grab any old motor oil off the shelf to use in your 2020 Jeep Compass. Instead, you’ll need to look for the grade and type recommended by the manufacturer. In this case, Jeep recommends using a MOPAR SAE 0W-20 engine oil with the API Certification Seal for Gasoline Engines on the bottle.
The SAE and the API certify professional-grade engine oil, and you’ll want to get an engine oil that sports seals from both institutions. The 0W tells us that this engine oil has a low viscosity in Winter (at 0°F), and the 20 tells us that this engine oil remains relatively thin at an engine-revving 212°F.
Jeep’s recommendation for the viscosity (or oil grade) of your Jeep Compass’s motor oil is the most compatible with your engine’s systems. This oil will perform well under cold and hot conditions, and its low viscosity will cause less wear and tear on your Compass’s engine.
You can use synthetic or conventional oil, so long as it still meets the recommended oil grade—SAE 0W-20. Make sure to find an oil without any additives, too. The safest bet is to go with the manufacturer brand
MOPAR SAE 0W-20
.

How often to change the oil on a 2020 Jeep Compass

So you know what type of oil you need to buy at the store, but make sure to double-check: Is it actually time to change your Jeep’s oil?
The 2020 Jeep Compass comes with an oil change indicator system that monitors your engine systems and illuminates an indicator message on your instrument cluster when it's time for an oil change. This message could go off as early as every 3,500 miles, depending on your driving habits. Just wait for that message before you change your oil, unless…
If you regularly
take your Jeep Compass off-road
or use it at low or idle RPMs, Jeep recommends changing your oil every 4,000 miles or 350 hours of engine usage, regardless of whether the indicator message is on. These conditions are what Jeep calls Severe Duty, and you’ll have to go off your
car maintenance schedule
rather than your Jeep’s indicator system.

How to change your oil and oil filter

Once that indicator message has gone off, it’s time to gather some materials for your 2020 Jeep Compass’s oil change. You’ll need a socket wrench, a drain pan, and a filter wrench to remove the old filter. You’ll also need a replacement full-flow disposable filter and your 5.5 quarts of 0W-20 motor oil.
Turn the engine on and let it run for about five minutes to get it up to its normal operating temperature—it may take a little longer if it’s cold outside. Then turn off the engine,
open the car hood
, and do the following:
  • Unscrew the oil fill cap.
  • Get the drain pan underneath the engine and remove the oil drain bolt and washer, letting the old oil drain out into the pan.
  • Use your filter wrench to undo the old filter.
  • Replace it with the new filter.
  • Return the oil drain bolt with a new washer and tighten it to 29 lb-ft of torque.
  • Pour your new engine oil in through the top and return the fill cap when you’re done.
The oil change shouldn’t take long
, but you’ll need to run your car for about 30 seconds once you’ve closed everything up. Check the oil level with your car’s dipstick to make sure you’ve filled it up all the way, then make any adjustments as needed. Once you’re done, reset the indicator system by turning your Jeep Compass into “Accessory Mode” and pumping the gas pedal three times within ten seconds.
Last but not least, it’s cleanup time! Dirty oil can’t be dumped or thrown in the trash. Instead, you can seal it in a container and take it to your authorized Jeep dealership or a local recycling center.

The bottom line

Changing your 2020 Jeep Compass’s oil at home is a great way to
save money on your car expenses
as long as you follow the proper steps. Always make sure to use 5.5 quarts of SAE 0W-20 motor oil—no more or less—and follow the instructions outlined in your owner’s manual.
