2017 Jeep Compass 2.0 engine oil capacity

The 2017 Jeep Compass 2.0 has an engine oil capacity of 4.5 quarts. This is the amount of oil your engine can hold and how much you will need to buy for your oil change.
The 2017 Jeep Compass 2.0 has a 2.0L 4-cylinder engine. Note that the 2.0L is not an indication of the oil capacity but the
engine displacement
—the amount of volume its four cylinders take up. Don’t confuse this number with the Jeep’s engine oil capacity.

What kind of oil does a 2017 Jeep Compass 2.0 need?

There are many different types of engine oils available. To get the most out of your 2017 Jeep Compass 2.0, make sure you use the oil type recommended by Jeep.
The 2017 Jeep Compass 2.0 takes full-synthetic oil, which is motor oil specifically designed to last longer and perform better than conventional oil. However, when it comes to synthetic vs. conventional oil, conventional is cheaper.
Specifically, the owner's manual recommends Pennzoil® 0W-20 full synthetic motor oil. SAE stands for Society of Automotive Engineers, while the numbers indicate the viscosity (thickness) of the oil under different conditions.
The 0W is the viscosity at cold temperatures, with W representing winter. The second number, 20, is the viscosity at normal engine operating temperatures (212 degrees Fahrenheit).

How often to change oil on a 2017 Jeep Compass 2.0

One of the benefits of synthetic oil is that you can go longer between oil changes. For example, some synthetic oils boast gaps of 7,500 to 10,000 miles between oil changes.
However, Jeep recommends you change your 2017 Jeep Compass 2.0 oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles as part of your
basic car maintenance schedule
. These intervals will keep your oil clean and your engine running at top efficiency.
There are a few watchouts that indicate its time to change your engine oil, regardless of how long it's been since your last oil change.
As you get to know your Jeep, you will learn early indicators that an oil change is just around the corner. Here are a few signs you need to change your oil:
  • Dirty oil is dark brown or black like soda (clean oil is light brown or amber, like a cup of tea)
  • Motor oil has a gritty texture
  • Strange noises coming from the engine
  • New smells, especially anything that smells like oil, smoke, or burning
  • Changes in your vehicle’s performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

Now that you know how much oil, what type of oil, and how often you need to change it, you’re ready to do
change the oil and filter
on your 2017 Jeep Compass 2.0. You should also switch your oil filter when you switch your oil—a new oil filter will keep your oil clean as it circulates through the engine.
You’ll need a socket wrench, a drain pan, and a filter wrench, plus a new filter and a few bottles of your chosen engine oil to change your oil.
Before you start, let your engine run for a few minutes so it reaches normal operating temperature. Then turn your car off, pop the hood, and you can get started:
  • Remove the oil fill cap first. You'll be trapped if you can’t get it off after the oil has drained
  • Remove the oil drain bolt and washer from under the engine
  • Let the old oil drain into the drain pan
  • Replace the old oil filter with the new filter
  • Once your old oil finishes draining, replace the oil drain bolt using a new washer
  • Refill the engine with your new oil and replace the fill cap
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary. Check to make sure that the
oil pressure light
has gone off on your dashboard.
Your final task is to properly dispose of your old engine oil. Don’t just dump it—you’ll need to put the old oil in a sealable container and bring it to your local recycling center.
