2019 Toyota Corolla engine oil capacity

First things first: how much engine oil does a 2019 Toyota Corolla need?
The 2019 Corolla’s 1.9-liter inline-four engine has an oil capacity of 4.4 quarts or nearly 4.2 liters. You’ll notice the engine’s displacement (or the 1.9 liters the engine’s cylinders take up) is different from its oil capacity (or the amount of oil you’ll need for an oil change). Because engine oil capacity and engine displacement are not the same, it’s important not to confuse the numbers.

What kind of oil does a 2019 Toyota Corolla need?

Now that we’ve established the amount of oil needed for your 2019 Corolla, let’s go over which kind of oil will keep your engine running smoothly. For the 2019 Corolla,
Toyota
recommends using Toyota Genuine SAE 5W-30 Full-Synthetic motor oil.
Why this specific oil? The 5W-30 indicates the oil’s viscosity (how thick it is) and what temperatures it is for. The 5 tells us the oil has a low viscosity at 0°F, and the 30 means it will remain thin at piping-hot temperatures. SAE stands for the “Society of Automotive Engineers” and indicates a reliable entity has coded the oil viscosity.
Essentially, you’re looking for an oil that will do well under a variety of weather conditions and that’s low viscosity will prevent further wear and tear on your engine. Full-synthetic motor oil has fewer impurities than less-refined oils, allowing them to provide better protection.

How often to change the oil on a 2019 Toyota Corolla

Now that you’ve got your 2019 Toyota Corolla oil capacity and type down, let’s go over how often you should change the oil.
Toyota recommends changing your 2019 Corolla’s oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles when using conventional oil. If you don’t spend a lot of time behind the wheel, another metric you can use is changing your oil every six months.
If you decide to use the manufacturer-recommended full synthetic oil, you should get a lot more distance before needing an oil change. Experts suggest changing synthetic oil every 7,500 to 10,000 miles
With such wide ranges, it’s important to check your Corolla’s oil levels regularly. This will help ensure you don’t leave things too long. Here are a few signs it may be time to change your engine oil:
  • Any new changes in your Corolla’s performance
  • Dark brown or black motor oil (it should be light brown or amber, like a cup of tea)
  • If you hear unfamiliar noises coming from your engine
  • The oil feels gritty or coarse
  • New smells, particularly smoke, oil, or burning

How to change your oil and oil filter

Once you’re ready to change your 2019 Corolla’s engine oil, grab a drain pan, a socket wrench, and a filter wrench made for removing old oil filters. You’ll also need 5 quarts of full synthetic 5W-30 engine oil and a replacement filter.
Once you’ve got your materials, run your engine until it reaches its normal operating temperature (on an average day, this shouldn’t take longer than 5 minutes). From there, turn off the engine, pop the hood, and complete the following steps:
  • Unscrew your oil fill cap and set it aside somewhere safe
  • From below the engine, remove the oil drain bolt and washer, and drain any remaining oil into the drain pan
  • Take off the old oil filter while the oil drains
  • Install your new replacement filter
  • Replace the oil drain bolt with a new washer, tightening it to 29 lb-ft
  • Refill the engine with your fresh 5 quarts of oil and put the fill cap back on
Once you’ve gone through the steps, turn the engine on for about 30 seconds, allowing the new oil to fill the filter. To make sure you’ve added the right amount, check the levels with your dipstick and top it off as needed.
From there, let the engine run for a few minutes and monitor it for leaks. If all has gone according to plan, your oil pressure light will turn off
Last but not least, don’t forget to clean up! Dirty oil shouldn’t be left on the ground—or put in the garbage. You’ll need to dispose of it in a sealed container at your local recycling center.
