background
The Toyota Corolla has an oil capacity of 3.9 quarts. The Corolla has one of the highest overall reliability ratings on RepairPal—so  if your 2001 Toyota Corolla is still going strong, you’ll want to keep it that way with routine maintenance.
One of the most important things you can do to give your vehicle the longest possible lifespan is to stay on top of
basic car maintenance
tasks—especially oil changes. To save a little extra time and money, some drivers opt to take care of this themselves. But to get the job done right, you’ll need to know your vehicle’s engine oil capacity and required oil type.
Here’s that info and more for the 2001 Toyota Corolla!

2001 Toyota Corolla engine oil capacity

You can find your vehicle’s engine oil capacity by checking your owner’s manual. The 2001 Toyota Corolla has an engine oil capacity of 3.9 quarts (3.7 liters).
Before you take care of an oil change, you’ll need to know your engine’s oil capacity—after all, too much or too little motor oil circulating through your engine can lead to serious damage. Plus, you’ll want to know how much oil to buy when you head to the auto parts store.

What kind of oil does a 2001 Toyota Corolla need?

Having enough engine oil for an oil change is one thing, but it’s just as important that you use the right type of motor oil. 5W-30 motor oil is the engine oil your 2001 Toyota Corolla owner’s manual recommends. 10W-30 is also an option, but it’s not an ideal choice for cold climates, because starting up in cold temperatures may be more difficult.
These numbers refer to the oil’s viscosity grade, which tells you about the oil’s thickness at different temperatures. Choosing the correct viscosity grade ensures the motor oil can properly circulate through its system the way that it needs to.
Using 5W-30 as an example, let’s break down what this means. The “W” here stands for “winter,” and the “5” just before it tells you its viscosity in colder temperatures. The lower the number, the thinner the oil. The “30” refers to its viscosity at normal engine operating temperatures.
Synthetic engine oil is perfectly fine to use, too, and it’s usually the more ideal choice for your engine’s health since it’s more refined and performs better.
What’s most important is that you choose the correct viscosity grade for your 2001 Toyota Corolla and that the engine oil you choose has an API certification seal to verify the necessary quality standards have been met.

How often to change the oil on a 2001 Toyota Corolla

The 2001 Toyota Corolla’s Scheduled Maintenance guide generally recommends
changing your oil
about every 7,500 miles under normal driving conditions, or as often as every 5,000 miles under more strenuous conditions, like:
  • Driving in dusty environments
  • Making repeat trips in freezing temperatures less than five miles
  • Frequent idling for extended periods (such as if you spend a lot of time in traffic jams)
Along with your typical driving conditions, whether you’re using conventional or synthetic oil will affect how often you should change it. Using synthetic oil will typically allow you to drive longer between oil change periods, but exactly how long will depend on the option you choose.
If you’re a more infrequent driver, it’s generally recommended to change your oil at least every six months.
Since so many factors can affect when it’s the right time to get an oil change, it’s important to periodically check your engine oil with your dipstick. Common recommendations are monthly, or every other time you refuel at the gas station.
If it’s time for your next oil change, here are some signs you might notice:
  • Motor oil is dark brown or black (as opposed to light brown)
  • Motor oil has a
    grainy texture
  • Your engine is making strange new noises
  • You notice burning or oil scents coming from your engine
  • Check engine light, low oil pressure light, or other related indicator lights turn on
  • Worsening vehicle performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

When the time finally comes for your Corolla’s next oil change, you’ll need to gather some supplies. Those will include items like a socket wrench, an oil filter wrench, a replacement oil filter, a drain pan, a funnel, gloves, protective eyewear, a sealed container to recycle the old oil, and 3.9 quarts of 5W-30 engine oil, of course.
Since the Corolla is so low to the ground, you may also need to use car jacks to get underneath the vehicle—just keep best safety practices in mind if you use them.
Once you have everything you need, you can get started by running your Corolla’s engine for a few minutes—just long enough to heat the engine oil, which will make it easier to drain. Then, shut the engine off, and proceed:
  • Open the hood of your Corolla and unscrew the oil fill cap
  • Remove the oil drain bolt and washer underneath the vehicle, allowing the old oil to pour into the drain pan
  • Remove the old oil filter and replace it with the new oil filter, following package instructions as needed
  • After the oil finishes draining, replace the oil drain bolt with a new washer to the proper tightening torque
  • Back at the hood of your Corolla, add your fresh engine oil to the proper fill level
Once you’ve made it this far, most of the hard work is out of the way! Now, just check around for any leaks, and let your engine run for a few minutes again to allow the oil to circulate. After turning off the engine and letting it cool, use your dipstick to check the oil level one last time, adding more oil if necessary.
Finally, remember to properly recycle your used engine oil! It’s an environmentally hazardous substance, so you can’t just dispose of it anywhere. Bring it to your local designated recycling center, an auto shop, or any other location that accepts it.
