background
A replacement battery pack for a 2014 Ford Focus Electric will set you back at least $11,000 to $14,000—well above the car’s current fair market value.
Contrary to what you may think, Ford was in the electric vehicle (EV) game long before the release of the
Mustang Mach-E
or the new
F-150 Lightning
. The Ford Focus Electric was in production from 2011 to 2018. The going rate for a Focus Electric in 2014 was about $30,000, and, while a replacement battery would cost about half that, you could offer the full $30,000 and it still wouldn’t matter—the batteries aren’t currently available for purchase.
As the 2014 Ford Focus Electric edges close to 10 years old,

How much does it cost to replace a 2014 Ford Focus Electric battery?

A replacement battery pack for a 2014 Ford Focus Electric could cost as much as $14,000, but none are currently available for purchase.
The 2014 Ford Focus Electric uses a 23 kWh lithium-ion battery pack with a 76-mile range. Replacement costs range from $11,000 to $14,000, and labor would average between $500 and $1,000, adding up to roughly $11,500 to $15,000 for a new battery—roughly half the original MSRP for the vehicle in 2014.
But this would only matter if such a replacement were actually possible—because it’s not. As
one family recently discovered
when their daughter’s 2014 Focus Electric gave up the ghost earlier in 2022, these battery packs are no longer available.
The Ford Focus Electric’s battery warranty lasted for eight years or 100,000 miles, so that’s finished, and a replacement wouldn’t be covered under auto insurance either. That means the replacement costs would have to come out of your own pocket—but, again, this is assuming you could actually get your hands on a replacement battery pack—which you can’t.
So what are your options?

Can you put a new battery in an old Ford Focus Electric?

Technically, yes, but the larger 33.5 kWh battery pack that comes with the 2017-2018 Focus Electric is not only substantially more expensive than the 2014’s—we’re talking $23,000 for the pack alone, sans labor—it, like the old battery, is also currently unavailable for purchase.
But what about a different battery pack—say, one made for one of Ford’s newer models, like the Mach-E?
This would seem to be a perfect solution, but swapping out one battery for another in an electric car is much more complicated than one might think. It’s not just a question of “will it fit”—which it won’t—but also of “will it work?” To be honest, it could—sort of—in theory. Unfortunately, to make it work, you’d be looking at both a hardware and a software upgrade. In other words, you’d essentially have to rebuild all the inner workings of the vehicle, as well as the software that governs those inner workings.
To date, engineers have figured out how to switch out
Tesla
batteries for more powerful ones, and a company in
Portland
, EV Rides, has cracked the code for upgrading batteries in
Nissan Leafs
. For the rest of us, replacements, not upgrades, are the only current option—that or a whole new car.

Ford Focus Electric battery capacity and range

There were only two generations of the Ford Focus Electric, but the second generation improved the vehicle’s capacity and range by nearly 50%. The table below compares the battery capacity and driving ranges for the two Ford Focus Electric models.
Model years
Battery capacity
Driving range
2011–2016
23 kWh
76 miles
2017–2018
33.5 kWh
115 miles

How long does a 2014 Ford Focus Electric battery last?

The life span for the 2014 Ford Focus Electric’s battery pack is approximately 10 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. Unfortunately, not many have made it past 70,000 miles, and several have been plagued with another common issue—coolant leaks. For some lucky buyers, these leaks occurred while they were still within the
battery warranty
, which is how we know the larger 33.5 kWh battery pack will work in the first-gen Focus Electric.
For those still driving under the Focus Electric battery warranty—the model was manufactured through 2018, after all—there are some things you can do to extend the life of your battery pack:
  • Avoid high temperatures. Just like the batteries in your smartphone or any other battery-operated device, high heat can cause your battery to degrade faster than normal. Parking in a cooled garage or, at least, in a shaded area during the warmer months can significantly extend your battery’s life.
  • Skip the fast charger. Is it convenient? Yes. Is it good for your battery? Absolutely not. While fast charging doesn’t destroy your battery, it does wear it out faster, so stick with a Level 2 or Level 1 whenever you can.
  • Don’t shoot for 100%. Have you ever had a laptop die because you never unplugged it? The same can happen to your EV. Your EV battery pack is designed for ebb and flow, not a constant 100% charge. If you don’t often find yourself using your full battery’s range, try charging to just 80% to extend your battery’s life.
