The 2019 Nissan Rogue has a J.D. Power reliability rating of 83 out of 100—which qualifies it for the “Great” category in reliability. It’s also one of the few cars you'll find that not only retains its original value, but after three years, it typically sells for more than its original MSRP. The 2019 Rogue is a great investment that will last you quite a long time if you keep up with the manufacturer's recommended
car maintenance schedule
.
Those routine maintenance expenses can add up—not to mention your
Nissan Rogue's car insurance cost.
Fortunately, you can put a nice dent in those expenses by changing your own oil. But first, you’ll need to know your Rogue’s engine oil capacity.

2019 Nissan Rogue engine oil capacity

As the name of this article suggests, one of the main things you’ll need to know to change your own oil is just how much oil it needs—in other words, its total engine oil capacity
The 2019 Nissan Rogue has a total engine oil capacity of 4.8 quarts—or about 4.6 liters, depending on where you live. This is not to be confused with the Rogue’s engine displacement, which is 2.5 liters and only measures the volume the cylinders take up.

What kind of oil does a 2019 Nissan Rogue need?

Just as important as the amount of oil that your Rogue needs is the type of oil that it uses. There are many different types of engine oil, and they are primarily differentiated by their viscosity—which is a fancy term for thickness
The 2019 Rogue needs fully synthetic engine oil with a viscosity of 0W-20. Just in case you’re not familiar with the viscosity rating system, here’s a quick look at the key points:
  • Viscosity ratings are written in this format: [number]W x [number].
  • The “W” next to the first number stands for “Winter.” It’s there because the first number always indicates the oil’s viscosity at a “cold start” or 0°F.
  • The second number describes the oil’s viscosity at normal operating temperature—which is 212°F.
Stay away from conventional motor oil—it shortens your engine’s lifespan. It’s best to stick to fully-synthetic motor oils.
Pretty much any fully-synthetic motor oil with a viscosity rating of 0W-20 will work just fine for your Nissan.
  • The genuine article: Nissan makes its own brand of motor oil, and it is obviously the recommended brand. You can’t go wrong with
    Genuine Nissan 0W-20
    oil.

How often to change the oil in a 2019 Nissan Rogue

In general, you should change the motor oil in your 2019 Nissan Rogue every 3,000 to 5,000 miles or once every six months—whichever comes first.
That’s just a general guideline, though. Since that’s a fairly large window, and you will sometimes need to change your oil early, the best thing to do is regularly check your oil (about once a month). If you notice any issues, go ahead and change it—even if you've done so recently.
Here are some of the most common warning signs that your oil has gone bad—if you notice any, change your oil as soon as you can:
  • There is an unpleasant odor when you run your engine for more than a few minutes—it’ll smell like oil, smoke, something burning, or all three.
  • The oil has changed colors from amber to black (or very dark brown).
  • If there’s debris or contaminants in your oil. If you don’t see anything just by looking, rub some between your fingers to see if the
    engine oil feels gritty
    or coarse.
  • Your engine is making a clattering, banging, or tapping noise
  • Your Rogue’s performance has declined.

How to change your oil and oil filter

Now that you know all the important details regarding your 2019 Nissan Rogue’s engine oil capacity, oil type requirements, and recommended oil change schedule, you’re ready to change your oil!
When you’re ready, the first thing you’ll need to do is gather up some tools and materials. You’ll need a filter wrench, a socket wrench, a drain pan, a fresh oil filter, and 5 quarts of fully-synthetic 0W-20 motor oil
Once you have those things, just follow these steps:
  • Start your Rogue’s engine and let it run for a few minutes to reach normal operating temperature
  • Once the engine is warmed up, shut it off. Then pop the hood
  • In the engine bay, locate the oil fill cap and remove it
  • Slide underneath the engine bay and locate the oil drain bolt. Position the drain pan directly under the drain bolt. Then, remove the bolt—the oil will start draining right away.
  • Using the filter wrench, remove the old oil filter. Then, wait for the rest of the oil to drain.
  • Once everything is drained, install the fresh oil filter
  • Put the oil drain bolt back and tighten it
  • Refill the engine using the 5 quarts of fresh oil.
  • Put the oil fill cap back. Then, start the engine and let it run for a few more minutes to check for leaks
  • Shut the engine off, close the hood, pour the used oil into a sealable container (an old milk jug works well), and clean up the rest of the mess.
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
When you have a chance, take the sealed container of used oil to a nearby recycling center—failure to do so is illegal in some states.
And voila! Congratulations—you’ve just successfully changed your own oil (and saved on
oil change costs
)!
