2018 Jeep Wrangler engine oil capacity

The first thing you need to do when you’re preparing to
change the oil and filter
in your 2018 Jeep Wrangler is to figure out how much engine oil you need to purchase.
The Jeep Wrangler needs 6 quarts (or around 5.6 liters) of engine oil. Oil is usually sold in 1 and 5-quart bottles, so you’ll need to get enough to fill your reservoir completely. You don’t want to put in less oil than your engine needs—or it could lead to some serious damage later on!

What kind of oil does a 2018 Jeep Wrangler need?

There are lots of different options when it comes to engine oil, but not all of them are a good fit for your Jeep Wrangler. You’ll want to stick to the manufacturer’s recommendation as closely as possible, which is a synthetic SAE 5W-20 engine oil.
The engine oil rating—5W-20—describes the oil’s viscosity at certain temperatures. The first number is how thin the oil stays when the engine is cold (the lower the number, the more viscous the oil is at cold temperatures). The second number is how thin the oil stays at normal engine operating temperature, which is typically 212°F. The higher the number, the thinner the oil at this temperature.
Synthetic motor oils typically last longer between oil changes compared to conventional oils and keep your engine cleaner and free from rust and sludge. Using a synthetic over a conventional oil in your Wrangler will keep the engine operating smoothly for longer.

How often to change oil on a 2018 Jeep Wrangler

Now that you know how much oil your 2018 Jeep Wrangler needs and what type to get, how do you know when it’s time to change the oil?
Jeep recommends changing your Wrangler’s oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles as part of your
basic car maintenance schedule
. However, you might be able to get away with changing your oil a little less frequently if you’re using full synthetic engine oil. Typically, synthetic oil only needs to be changed every 7,000 to 10,000 miles
The best way to tell if you need to change your oil is to check it regularly. You can monitor your oil levels and how clean the oil is if you check it once a month or so. If it changes to a dark brown or black color, or it feels gritty if you rub it between your fingers, it’s time for an oil change.
You might also notice some of the following signs when your vehicle is due for an oil change:
  • Unfamiliar engine noises
  • Any oily, smokey, or burning smells
  • Any change to your vehicle’s performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

If your Wrangler is due for an oil change, just grab your 6 quarts of new engine oil, a replacement filter, and the right tools to get started. You’ll need a socket wrench, a drain pan, and a filter wrench.
Start by turning on your engine and letting it run for about five minutes. This will warm the engine oil and make draining it out much easier. After your engine has reached normal operating temperature, shut it off and
open the hood of your car
Here are the steps for changing your oil:
  • Remove the oil fill cap
  • Position your drain pan under the vehicle, then remove the oil drain bolt
  • While the old oil is draining, remove the old oil filter
  • Install the new filter
  • When the old oil has finished draining, replace the oil drain bolt
  • Refill the oil reservoir with new oil and replace the fill cap
Use your dipstick to ensure you’ve put in enough new engine oil. After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary. Check to make sure the
oil pressure light
has turned off on your car's dash!
Then, you’ll need to clean up the area where you were working. Make sure you dispose of the old engine oil properly—don’t pour it out on the ground or throw it away! You’ll need to pour it into a sealed container and take it to a designated recycling center.
