2008 Jeep Wrangler engine oil capacity

So just how much oil does this beast need for a proper oil and filter change?
The 2008 Jeep Wrangler has an engine oil capacity of 6 quarts. Under the hood of your Wrangler you’ll find a 3.8-liter V6 engine that’s capable of 202 horsepower and 237 lb/ft of torque. The 3.8-liter figure refers to the engine’s displacement, or the amount of volume those six cylinders take up.
Engine displacement isn’t the same thing as the oil capacity, so make sure not to assume that those numbers are interchangeable.

What kind of oil does a 2008 Jeep Wrangler need?

There are a lot of different kinds of oil out there, and putting the wrong kind of oil in an engine can have potentially disastrous results. The proper oil for your 2008 Jeep Wrangler is a premium grade SAE 5W-20 oil. This is what the owner’s manual states, and it’s always best to stick to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
So what’s all that letter and number salad mean?  The numbers are a rating of the oil’s viscosity, or how thick it is.
The “W” stands for winter, and SAE stands for Society of Automotive Engineers, the entity that codes oil viscosity. The 5 means that this oil will stay relatively thin at low temperatures, and the 20 means that it’s also a good choice when things are hot outside.
The upshot? This oil will be good in a wide range of temperatures and will help to prevent wear and tear on your engine. Choosing synthetic oil over conventional oil is fine, as long as it’s the correct viscosity and has the American Petroleum Institute (API) seal

How often to change oil on a 2008 Jeep Wrangler

We know how much, we know what kind, now the final question— how often?
Jeep recommends changing the oil on your Wrangler every 3,000 to 5,000 miles as part of your
basic car maintenance schedule
. If you don’t put a lot of miles on your Jeep, then every six months is a good rule of thumb.
But engines and driving conditions can vary widely! To ensure you're changing the oil at the right time, check your oil levelon a regular basis—most experts recommend taking a peek at your oil at every other refuel.
Look for these signs that it’s time for a change:
  • Color change: motor oil that needs changing is dark brown or black, while clean oil is light brown or amber
  • Motor oil that feels coarse or gritty
  • Unfamiliar noises coming from the engine
  • New smells, especially anything that smells like oil, smoke, or burning
  • Changes in your vehicle’s performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

Time for an oil change? Let’s do it! Gather your tools and materials: a socket wrench, a drain pan, and a filter wrench designed to remove the old oil filter. Grab a few old rags to help keep things clean, and don’t forget to get a replacement oil filter and 6 quarts of premium 5W-20 oil
Run the engine for a few minutes to get things up to normal temperature, then shut it off. Open the hood carefully—you'll be
adding oil to a hot engine
after all—then follow these steps:
  • Remove the oil fill cap
  • Get underneath the engine and remove the oil drain bolt and washer, draining the old oil into the drain pan
  • Remove the old oil filter and continue to let the oil drain
  • Install the new filter
  • Replace the oil drain bolt using a new washer and tighten it to 29 lb-ft
  • Refill the engine with your new oil and replace the fill cap
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
Use the dipstick to check that you’ve added enough oil, but be careful not to overfill it. Tighten everything back up, and then run the engine for a bit. Look for leaks and check to make sure the
oil pressure light
is off on your Wrangler's dashboard.
Don’t forget the cleanup! Don’t dump the used out on the ground, pour it down the drain or just toss it in the trash. Some garbage haulers will take used motor oil if it’s in a properly sealed container and placed near the bin. If this isn’t an option for you, take the old oil to a recycling center.
