2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee engine oil capacity

The 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6L engine has an oil capacity of 6 quarts. That’s true for any of the 2018 Grand Cherokee’s two available engines—the 3.6-liter gasoline V6, or the formidable 5.7-liter V8 engine.
Those other numbers refer to
engine displacement
. For instance, the V8 engine has 5.7 liters of cylinder volume, but it uses 7 quarts of oil. The 3.6-liter V6 engine, on the other hand, uses 6 quarts of oil. Engine displacement and oil capacity are not the same things.

What kind of oil does a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee need?

You know the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee needs either 6 or 7 quarts of oil, but you can’t just use any old oil you find in your nearest auto parts store. Every engine is different, and you’ll need to use a specific type of oil to keep your engine running safely.
Any 5W-20 full synthetic oil will work in your Jeep Grand Cherokee, so don’t worry if you can’t find those exact brands. Just double check that you're using synthetic oil rather than conventional oil.
Yay, more numbers! But don’t worry—these numbers are super easy to break down. They refer to oil viscosity, a fancy way of saying how thick the oil is. The zero at the start simply means zero degrees Fahrenheit, and the “W” means “winter.” This means the engine’s “0W” oil moves better when it’s cold out than, say, a 1W oil would.
The “20” in the motor oil grade refers to the speed at which the oil moves through the engine when it's super hot—at 212 degrees. You might see some mechanics use a higher number if you live in a hot or tropical climate, like Arizona or the Virgin Islands.
“Full synthetic” means this oil is man-made. It’s usually made using crude oil, but it’s chemically modified and purified to work better in modern vehicles.

How often to change oil on a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Alright, you now know way more about motor oil than you ever cared to know. But it’s all useful information, we promise! But you still don’t know quite everything you’ll want to know. For instance, how often do you change the oil in your 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
The vast majority of experts will tell you to always change your oil as part of your
basic car maintenance schedule
before you’ve driven 5,000 miles. Jeep recommends changing the oil between 3,000 and 5,000 miles, too. If you aren’t driving the car often, be sure to change the oil once every six months or so, because idle motor oil doesn’t stay good forever.
Unsure if you need an oil change or not? You can always use the dipstick to see what the engine’s oil looks like, and pay attention to other warning signs too:
  • Does the motor oil look dark brown or black, like cola?
  • Does it feel coarse or gritty in your fingers?
  • Do you smell oil or smoke, or a burning smell when the engine is running?
  • Does the engine sound more labored than usual?
  • Is the engine underperforming?
Any of those could be signs it’s time to change the oil. But smells, sounds, or engine feel should result in checking the oil first before you go and change it, of course.

How to change your oil and oil filter

Now that you know your 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee’s oil capacity, the type of oil it needs, how to check the oil, and what all of this stuff means, it’s finally time to
change the oil and filter
!
This is a super easy DIY project anyone can do at home. It can get messy and you won’t get through this without getting your hands dirty, so no one gets to judge you if you’d rather pay an expert to do this. But if you’re interested in saving some money on labor, this is very simple.
Here are the general steps you’ll want to follow:
  • Buy fully synthetic 0W-20 motor oil (SAE 5W-20 for the 5.7L engine) and an oil filter. Remember, you need 6 (or 7) quarts, so you may need to buy more than one container
  • Get a socket wrench, a drain pan, and a filter wrench. You can buy these things at any auto parts store, and they pay for themselves after changing your own oil!
  • Run the engine until it reaches its normal operating temperature. This heats the oil up enough that it flows more easily, but not so hot that you get burned
  • Remove the oil fill cap on the top side of the engine
  • Place your drain pan underneath the oil drain bolt, then remove the bolt and the washer. You should replace the washer with each oil change
  • Remove the old oil filter and wait until the old oil is fully drained
  • Install your new oil filter
  • Reinstall the bolt and the new washer, tightening it to 29 foot-pounds
  • Refill the engine’s motor oil, then pop the oil fill cap back on
You’re just about done. Now you just need to check the dipstick to make sure you’ve added enough oil, then run the engine for a few minutes to make sure nothing is leaking. The
oil pressure light
on your Jeep’s dashboard will turn off soon if everything is working.
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
Take your old, dirty motor oil in a sealed container to a recycling center. You can’t just toss used motor oil in the trash or dump it on the ground.
