2018 Ford F-250 Super Duty with turbo 6.7-liter V8 diesel engine

Before changing the oil, you first need to know how much engine oil your F-250 Super needs. The 6.7-liter diesel engine has an oil capacity of 13 quarts (or 12.3 liters). Keep in mind that the oil engine capacity is how much oil the engine can hold. Engine displacement, however, is how much volume the cylinders take up, and that is where the 6.7-liter number comes from.

What kind of oil does a 2018 Ford F-250 Super Duty with turbo 6.7-liter V8 diesel engine need?

There are countless engine oil options out there, but with a truck that works this hard, now is not the time to get the cheapest product on the shelf. Always follow the manufacturer's recommendation as listed in the owner's manual. In this case, it is Motorcraft® SAE 10W-30 Super Duty Diesel Motor Oil.
Let's break down what you are looking for. First and foremost, diesel motor oil has a higher viscosity (thickness) than the regular gasoline engine oil used in most cars, so do not confuse them! Ford owners need to know how the oil will work in cold temperatures (0° F) and boiling temperatures (212° F). So 10W, with the W meaning winter, shows that the oil is thin at 0° F, and the 30 shows that it is relatively thick at 212 °F.
Ford requires a full synthetic oil for the diesel engine. Full synthetic costs more than its synthetic blend and conventional oil counterparts, but it will last longer, so you won't have to change the oil as often.
Going outside of the manufactures recommendation may potentially void warranties, so you will want to be cautious if you plan on using other oil grades in your engine.

How often to change oil on a 2018 Ford F-250 Super Duty with turbo 6.7-liter V8 diesel engine

Ford recommends changing your oil every 10,000 miles. This is under the assumption that your truck is using the recommended full synthetic oil. If you deviated from their suggestion and chose a synthetic blend or conventional oil, it will need changing every 3.000 miles
The average F-250 Super Duty lasts about 200,000 miles, but with checking your oil level and quality as part of your
basic routine maintenance
, you might rack up over 600,000before it hits the boneyard! Here is how you know it is time for an oil change:
  • Gritty or coarse motor oil
  • Clean oil is light brown or amber, like a cup of tea. Dirty oil that is dark brown or black, like a cup of soda, needs changing
  • A change in odor, especially if it smells like grease, smoke, or burning
  • Unfamiliar
    engine noises
  • Differences in your vehicle's performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

If you see any of the signs listed above, it's time to change your oil. Here is what you’ll need to get started:
  • 13 quarts of 10W-30 full synthetic diesel motor oil
  • Socket wrench
  • Drain pan
  • New washer
  • Filter wrench
  • Replacement diesel motor filter
    Motorcraft FL-2051-S
Warm oil is thinner and makes draining easier, so let the truck run for about five minutes to bring the oil up to the average operating temperature. Park the truck on level ground, shut off the engine, pop the hood and follow these steps:
  • Take off the oil fill cap
  • Crawl under the truck and place the drain pan under the engine block
  • Remove the oil drain bolt and washer, letting the oil drain into the pan
  • Take off the old
    oil filter
  • Install the new filter
  • Replace the oil drain bolt using a new washer and then tighten it to 29 lb-ft
  • Finally, add the new oil to the engine and put the fill cap back in place
Check the dipstick to verify the oil level and ensure there aren't any leaks after running the engine.
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
Do not attempt to get rid of the oil by dumping it down the drain
The oil from just one oil change can contaminate over one million gallons of water if disposed of improperly. Instead, put the old oil back into the empty oil containers and give them to your local recycling center. Or, drop them off at an
AutoZone
or
Advanced Auto Parts
store since they have an oil recycling program.
