2019 Kia Forte engine oil capacity

First and foremost, the top question: how much engine oil does a 2019 Kia Forte need?
The 2019 Kia Forte has a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with the oil capacity of 4.2 quarts or 3.9 liters. It’s easy to confuse the oil capacity with the engine displacement, but be careful not to do this. The engine displacement is the volume the engine’s cylinders take up (2.0 liters in this instance), while the oil capacity is the amount of oil required per oil change. The numbers are not interchangeable.

What kind of oil does a 2019 Kia Forte need?

Now that we’ve settled the question of how much oil your Forte needs, the next thing to discern is the oil type your Forte’s engine requires.
Not all engine oils are the same, so it’s important to get this right. Don’t grab any five-quart bottle off the shelf—you need fully synthetic 5W-20 detergent oil. This is Kia’s recommendation for the 2019 Forte, so you should stick to it.
You might be wondering what that string of numbers and letters actually means. The numbers in the oil grade refer to the oil’s viscosity (or thickness) and the “W” stands for winter. The number 5 communicates that the oil has a low viscosity at 0ºF, but the number 20 means the oil is thin at 212ºF.
Still wondering what this means? To put it simply, you want oil with these ratings because it performs well in cold weather conditions and the low viscosity means less
wear and tear
on your engine. A detergent oil has additives that collect contaminants from your engine to keep it running smoothly.

How often to change the oil for a 2019 Kia Forte

Okay, you’ve got the oil capacity and type down. Next up is
changing your oil
.
How do you know when to change your oil? Kia recommends changing your oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. If you put a lot of miles on your car, you might want to increase the frequency to every six months to keep your oil clean and functional.
Sometimes you can wait a little longer when you use a synthetic oil, like in a 2019 Kia Forte. You can wait as long as every 7,500 to 10,000 miles.
If you don’t feel comfortable with the discrepancy between the two recommendations, it might be best for you to monitor your oil yourself. Check your oil level on a regular basis to monitor when it’s time to change the oil—every other refuel or once a month is frequent enough. Keep an eye out for the following signs that it’s time for an oil change as well:
  • Unfamiliar or
    loud engine noises
  • A change in smells coming from the engine, especially oil,
    smoke
    , or burning
  • Changes in your vehicle’s performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

Now that it’s time for an oil change, you’ll need a few tools to get the job done right. Grab a socket wrench, a drain pan, and a filter wrench that can remove the old oil filter. You’ll also need a replacement filter and five quarts of synthetic 5W-20 engine oil.
To begin, turn your car on and let the engine run until it comes up to normal operating temp. Normally this takes around five minutes. Once your engine has reached the correct temperature, turn off your car, open the hood, and follow these steps:
  • Remove the oil fill cap
  • Get underneath the engine and remove the oil drain bolt and washer, draining the old oil into the drain pan
  • Remove the old oil filter and continue to let the oil drain
  • Install the new filter
  • Replace the oil drain bolt using a new washer and tighten it to 29 lb-ft
  • Refill the engine with your new oil and replace the fill cap
Double-check that you’ve added enough oil to the engine by checking your dipstick. If you’ve added enough, turn your car on for a few minutes and keep an eye out for any leaks. Your dashboard’s
oil pressure light
should turn off if you’ve done everything correctly.
Finally, it’s time for cleanup. Whatever you do, don’t dump the dirty oil on the ground or put it in your garbage can. You’ll need to put it in a sealed container and bring it to a local recycling center.
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
