2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee engine oil capacity

A 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6L eninge can hold 6 quarts of engine oil or 5.6 liters. Meanwhile, the 5.7L engine can hold 7 quarts, or 6.6 liters, of engine oil
Make sure you don’t mix up your
engine’s displacement
with its engine oil capacity. The amount of space your engine takes up isn’t the same as how much oil it can hold, and you should never assume those numbers are interchangeable!

What kind of oil does a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee need?

Now that you know how much oil your Grand Cherokee can hold, you’re probably wondering what kind of oil to use. For the 3.6L engine, it’s recommended you buy SAE 0W-20 fully synthetic motor oil, while SAE 5W-20 fully synthetic motor oil is used in the 5.7L engine to keep your Jeep purring. Note that Jeep specifically recommends synthetic rather than conventional oil.
If you’re new to oil grades, you may be wondering what those number letters and numbers mean—but understanding them is actually quite simple! The first number represents how viscous the oil will be from a cold start (with the “W” standing for “winter”), while the second number tells us the oil’s viscosity at the standard operating temperature of your engine.
SAE stands for the Society of Automotive Engineers, which is the organization that codes oil viscosity; and “fully synthetic” simply means there are additives in the oil that improves its longevity and performance.

How often to change the oil on a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee

In most cases, Jeep recommends changing your oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles as part of your
basic car maintenance schedule
—if you’re using conventional oil. However, since your 2017 Grand Cherokee prefers a synthetic blend, you may actually get away with going even longer between oil changes! On average, synthetic oil will last between 7,500 to 10,000 miles
That being said, those numbers are still pretty big ranges! If you want to be confident that you’re changing your Jeep’s oil at the correct time, adding regular oil level checks to your car maintenance routine can help. Keep an eye out for the following signs that your engine oil needs changing:
  • Unusual engine noise
  • Unfamiliar odors, such as oil, smoke, or burning smells
  • A change in oil color from dark brown to black (as opposed to its normal amber color)
  • Oil that looks or feels coarse or gritty
  • Changes in your vehicle’s overall performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

You know your oil capacity, you’ve got the right oil—the only thing left to do is
change the oil and filter
itself! Before you get started, make sure you have the following materials on hand: a socket wrench, a drain pan, a filter wrench, and a new oil filter. Having a funnel and some old rags also isn’t a bad idea, either—both can make the pouring and cleaning process a bit easier!
Start things off by running the engine for about 5 minutes or so, until it’s reached its normal operating temperature. This helps warm the oil up, which makes draining and replacing it easier. Then shut the engine back off, pop the hood, and follow these steps:
  • Remove your oil fill cap
  • Remove the oil drain bolt and washer underneath your engine, using your socket wrench
  • Let the old engine oil empty into your drain pan (this may take several minutes)
  • Meanwhile, replace the oil filter using your filter wrench
  • Once the old oil has finished draining, replace the oil drain bolt (and be sure to use a new washer!)
  • Then refill the engine oil tank (using your funnel, if you have one!) with the proper type and amount of oil.
Replace the oil fill cap, and voila! You’ve successfully changed your 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee’s oil yourself. Once you’ve finished, be sure to take a few minutes to run your car again, watching out for any leaks. You’ll know you’ve done things right if the
oil pressure light
on your dashboard has turned off.
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
Don’t forget the most important step: clean up! You should never dump dirty engine oil on your lawn or throw it in the garbage. Rather, use a sealed bag or container to collect the old oil, and dispose of it at your local recycling center.
