2017 GMC Acadia engine oil capacity

Before you
change the oil and filter
in your GMC, you’re going to need to figure out how much oil your 2017 GMC Acadia needs
Your 2017 GMC Acadia has three different engine options with different oil capacities. But don't worry, we will list them out for you:
  • 2.5L L4 engine FWD: 5 quarts, or about 4.7 liters
  • 2.5L L4 engine AWD: 6 quarts, or about 5.7 liters
  • 3.6L V6 engine: 6 quarts, or about 5.7 liters
Here, we need to make a quick distinction. You may remember your car listed as having a 2.5L or 3.6L engine. This is not your oil capacity, but rather the volume your engine cylinders take up. But be careful, the number for your oil capacity and the colume of your engine cylinders are not interchangeable.

What kind of oil does a 2017 GMC Acadia need?

You also need to know which type of motor oil works best with your GMC’s engine. Different oil grades are optimized for different types of engines. As for your 2017 GMC Acadia, GMC recommends that you use 5W-30 motor oil for the 3.6L engine and 5W-20 motor oil for both 2.5L engines.
It’s so important to stick to this recommendation because this grade works well with your GMC’s engine in both hot and cold temperatures. However, it's up to you whether you use synthetic or conventional oil, although synthetic is favored by GMC.
If you’re curious what 5W-30 or 5W-20 means, the numbers indicate the relative viscosity (thickness) of the oil: the larger the number, the thicker the oil. “5W” indicates the viscosity (thickness) of the oil is very thin at cold start temperatures and the “30” (or "20") means the oil is thicker at, but still optimized for, hot operating temperatures.
To stick with what is recommended by the owner's manual, look for
ACDelco dexos1 5W-30 Synthetic Blend
or ACDelco dexos1 5W-20 Synthetic Blend motor oil.

How often to change oil on a 2017 GMC Acadia

Now that you know the correct oil type, you should be able to recognize when your GMC Acadia needs an oil change.
GMC recommends that Acadia drivers change their vehicle’s oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles as part of your
basic car maintenance schedule
. However, since this is a pretty big range that depends on your personal driving habits, a better practice is to check on your oil at least once a month. Look for:
  • Dirty motor oil. Motor oil should be light in color, and if you notice it getting darker and coarser, you should change it
  • Screeching sounds
  • Burning smells
  • Performance issues, such as a decrease in fuel efficiency

How to change your oil and oil filter

Now you’re ready to change your GMC’s oil—just have the following items ready:
  • A socket wrench
  • A drain pan
  • A filter wrench
  • The replacement filter
  • 5W-30 or 5W-20 motor oil
Follow these steps to change your GMC’s oil:
  • Start your engine and run it for at least five minutes. This will get the engine warm and ready for an oil change
  • Turn the engine off and
open the hood of your car
  • Take off the oil fill cap and remove the oil drain bolt and washer. Oil will start draining out, so you should be ready with your drain pan
  • Replace the old filter with a new one
  • Screw the oil drain bolt and washer back on, and fill up the engine with oil
  • Use the dipstick as an indicator of when you’ve added enough oil
  • Check for leaks by  running the engine again
  • Get rid of your waste by bringing a container of the old oil to a recycling depot
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary
A great indicator of a successful oil change is your
oil pressure light
turning off.
