Is it illegal to hang things from your rearview mirror?
I just started driving, and I’ve been hanging my student ID and some other things from my rearview mirror. My mom freaked out and told me to take it all off because it’s illegal to hang stuff from my rearview mirror. Is that true?

I hate to break it to you, but your mom might be right. It is illegal to hang things from your rearview mirror in some states. But even in states where it’s legal, you could be pulled over and ticketed if a police officer has reason to believe the items hanging from your mirror create an obstruction.
To see if you can hang your ID or another small object from your rearview mirror, first check your state’s statutes. If there is no law against it, you should be fine hanging small items from your mirror like:
- *parking permits
- *air fresheners
- *graduation tassels.
Avoid hanging large items like those enormous fuzzy dice and other things that can seriously inhibit your ability to see out of your windshield.
