Vehicles have several ways of reminding us about the
routine maintenance
needed to keep them running smoothly and safely. One of the most important of these reminders is the oil change light.
It’s important to pay attention to this light and change your oil as soon as possible. But if you change the oil yourself, you’ll also need to manually reset the light—otherwise, it will continue to alert you every time you turn your Jeep on.
Sometimes the operation to reset the alert can be quite complicated and easy to forget, so if you need a refresher on how to do this in the 2016 Jeep Cherokee, here’s our easy guide.

How to reset the engine oil maintenance light on a 2016 Jeep Cherokee

After you drive your Jeep Cherokee for a set period of time, it’s programmed to warn you that it’s time to change your oil. You can use your instrument panel to check on how much ‘Oil Life’ is left, and when this time is up, the instrument panel will chime and display Oil Change Due each time you start your Jeep.
It’s done this way to make sure you pay attention and don’t ignore it, because changing your oil is essential for the smooth operation of your engine, not to mention that it can help you avoid more expensive
car repairs
in the long run. But if you do change the oil and don’t get around to resetting the warning, you could be dealing with more than just a brief irritation.
Your Cherokee needs to track the correct interval before reminding you to change your oil again. If you wait six months before resetting it, you risk being six months late to receive the notification next time.
Here’s how to reset the oil light if you have a Keyless Enter-N-Go system:
  • Without pushing the brake pedal, push the Engine Start/Stop button and cycle the ignition to the On/Run position (don’t start the engine).
  • Fully depress the accelerator pedal, slowly, three times within 10 seconds.
  • Without pushing the brake pedal, push the Engine Start/Stop button once to return the ignition to the Off/Lock position.
If you don’t have the Keyless Enter-N-Go system:
  • Turn the ignition switch to the On/Run position (don’t start the engine).
  • Fully depress the accelerator pedal, slowly, three times within 10 seconds.
  • Turn the ignition switch to the Off/Lock position.
These actions should reset the oil change light, but if the light still comes on again when you start the car, repeat the relevant procedure. If it still comes on, you may need to take it to your dealership or auto repair shop to get them to check it and reset it for you.

How often does a 2016 Jeep Cherokee need an oil change?

Jeep recommends that you should change your oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles for the 2016 Cherokee, unless you use synthetic oil, in which case it only needs to be changed every 7,500 to 10,000 miles.
Of all the warning lights that can appear in your vehicle, changing the oil can seem like one that you can ignore for a while and sort out at a later date, but it’s important to make sure that it does get changed sooner rather than later. Otherwise, you risk causing
serious damage to your engine
.
This can of course be done at an auto repair shop and will cost you around $100 a time. If you choose this option you’ll also get the oil change light reset at the same time, but you can save this money by doing it yourself. Just make sure you follow the recommendations in the
owner’s manual
, especially when it comes to using the right kind of oil.
