2016 Hyundai Sonata engine oil capacity

Let’s get started with the big question: how much engine oil does a 2016 Hyundai Sonata need?
The amount of engine oil your Sonata can hold will depend on the trim level, but for the 2.4L4-cylinder engine F and 2.0L 4-cylinder engine B turbo, your engine oil capacity is 5.07 quarts or 4.8 liters. Keep in mind that the engine displacement (2.0 or 2.4L) accounts for the volume of the 4-cylinder engine and has nothing to do with the engine oil capacity. Therefore, these numbers are not interchangeable, and 5.07 quarts is how much oil you need to fill the engine adequately.

What kind of oil does a 2016 Hyundai Sonata need?

The trim level makes a big difference regarding the type of engine oil you can use in your 2016 Hyundai Sonata as well. If you have the Turbo trim package, the manufacturer recommendation is SAE 5W-30 or 5W-40. If you have the 2.4L F Engine, the recommendation is SAE 5W-20 or 5W-30. What do all those letters and numbers mean? We are glad you asked!
Each vehicle requires a particular oil grade to run at its best, and the oil grade refers to the oil’s viscosity or thickness. 5W is the required viscosity at cold engine starts while the oil is at its thickest, with W representing “winter”. The next number, 20,30, or 40, depending on your trim level, is the required viscosity for when the engine is running at its blazing hot operating temperature. The oil must be thin enough to work but thick enough to protect the engine’s mechanisms
Going outside of the manufacturer's recommendation can impact the validity of your manufacturer’s warranty, so sticking with their requirements is always a good idea. However, if you are unable to find the preferred oil brand, another brand will do just fine as long as it meets the same quality standards.

How often to change oil on a 2016 Hyundai Sonata

Now that you know how much oil you need and what type of oil you need to purchase, next is learning how often you actually need to change the oil in your 2016 Hyundai Sonata.
Hyundai recommends changing the oil every 7,500 miles or every six months if you don’t drive a lot. However, this is just a recommendation. You may need to change it sooner if you have selected a lower-grade conventional oil for your oil change. On the other hand, some high mileage oils guarantee you can get 20,000 miles out of your car before needing another oil change. With such a significant variance, how do you know when the time is right?
By getting to know your car! Check your oil quality and levels at every gas fuel up. Here is what to look for:
  • Motor oil that needs changing is dark brown or black (Clean oil is light brown or amber, like a cup of tea. Dirty oil is like a cup of soda.)
  • Motor oil feels coarse or gritty
  • New smells, especially anything that smells like oil, smoke, or burning
  • Changes in your vehicle’s performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

Now that you know when to change your oil, let’s get to it! Here is a list of what you need to get started:
  • Socket wrench
  • Filter wrench
  • New filter
  • Drain pan
  • New washer
  • Your choice of engine oil - you will need to buy 6 quarts to have enough
First, run the car for about five minutes to get the oil nice and warm. Once you are ready, park on level ground, pop the hood, and follow these steps:
  • Take off the oil fill cap
  • Place the drain pan under the engine and remove the oil drain bolt and washer
  • Let the oil drain into the pan
  • Remove the old oil filter
  • Install the new filter
  • Replace the oil drain bolt using a new washer and tighten
  • Refill the engine with your new oil and replace the fill cap
  • Check the oil level with the dipstick and add more oil if needed
  • Run the car for a few minutes to check for leaks
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
Your oil pressure light should turn off within a few minutes. Once you have disposed of the oil, you’re done! Put the dirty oil in the empty oil cans and drop it off at your local recycling center or auto parts store with an oil recycling program. Even a little of this oil in the ground or water is incredibly hazardous so be careful!
