2015 Hyundai Sonata engine oil capacity

The first thing you will need to know before changing your oil is how much engine oil your 2015 Hyundai Sonata needs
This 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder sedan holds 5 quarts or 4.8 liters of engine oil. How does it hold 4.8 liters of oil when it has a 2.0-liter engine? The 2.0-liters refers to the engine’s displacement—the volume that the cylinders take up inside the engine. The engine oil capacity is the amount of oil the engine can hold and what you need to buy. The numbers are not interchangeable.

What kind of oil does a 2015 Hyundai Sonata need?

Now that you know how much oil to buy let's talk about the type of oil your 2015 Hyundai Sonata needs. There are so many kinds of engine oil that it is easy to be overwhelmed, but each vehicle needs a specific kind. Hyundai recommends using an SAE 5W-30  or SAE 5W-40 level engine oil
Since using an oil other than the manufacturer's recommendation can void the manufacturer's warranty on the car, it is prudent to purchase the correct one.
Your Sonata performs its best when the engine oil is thin enough to work at cold temperatures and cold engine starts and is still thick enough to lubricate the engine at its scaldingly hot average operating temperature. So the oil grade of 5W, with W meaning winter, it the oil viscosity or thickness when cold, and 30 and 40 is the viscosity level when hot. 5W-30 is best in colder climates. The SAE seal simply stands for Society of Automotive Engineers, the entity that codes oil viscosity.
As far as the best brand of engine oil, here is a short list of engine oils favored by fellow Sonata drivers:
  • Manufacturers recommendation: Quaker State SAE 5W-30 Full Synthetic Motor Oil
  • Alternative manufacturers recommendation: Quaker State SAE 5W-40 Full Synthetic Motor Oil

How often to change oil on a 2015 Hyundai Sonata

How do you know when its time to change the oil on your 2015 Hyundai Sonata?
Hyundai recommends changing your oil every 7,500 miles. However, this isn’t a hard and fast rule. For example, some superior motors oils state they can last up to 20,000 miles. If you choose to save money and go with a lower-grade synthetic blend, you would need to change the oil more often, closer to 5,000 miles
The best way to get to know your vehicle and perform changes at the appropriate time is by checking the color and quality of your at every fuel up. You can do this by popping the hood, pulling out the dipstick, and wiping it with a rag or paper towel. Here is what you will notice when it is time for an oil change:
  • Motor oil is dark brown or black
  • Gritty or course motor oil
  • Loud sounds
    coming from the engine
  • Smoke or burning smells
  • Performance changes

How to change your oil and oil filter

If at your last oil check in you saw dark and gritty oil, now it is time to do that
oil change
! Here is a list of the materials you need to have handy:
  • Socket wrench
  • Filter wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Replacement filter
  • Replacement washer
  • Five quarts of SAE 5W-30 or SAE 5W-40 motor oil
Run your vehicle for about five minutes to get the engine oil up to normal operating temperatures. Warmer engine oil makes for a
faster oil change
. After that part on level ground, pop the hood, and follow these steps:
  • Remove the oil fill cap
  • Get under the car and place the drain pan underneath the engine
  • Remove the oil drain bolt, washer, and old oil filter
  • Allow the oil to drain into the pan
  • Install the new filter
  • Replace the oil drain bolt using a new washer
  • Refill the engine with new oil and replace the fill cap
Before closing the hood, check the level with the dipstick to ensure the proper level. Then let the vehicle run for a few minutes and watch for leaks. The dashboard oil pressure light might take a few moments to shut off.
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
Don’t forget to properly dispose of the old engine oil. Dumping it down the drain, down the gutter, or sneaking it into the garbage bin, will do a lot of damage to the local environment. Instead, place it in a sealed container and bring it to a local recycling center or auto parts store with an oil recycling center

Don’t forget regular insurance policy maintenance

That is all there is to it! Regular DIY oil changes will keep your 2015 Hyundai Sonata running smoothly for years to come and will help you save your hard earned money. With the cost of gas these days, we can all use a little more change in our pockets.
