background
With its bold and funky styling and zippy engine, the 2015 Kia Soul provides a fun driving experience in a stylish package. But even the spunky Kia Soul won’t last forever without regular maintenance—and the first thing Kia drivers should know is their engine oil capacity.
Although the Kia Soul is an affordable vehicle, owning one can come with costs that add up quickly, from insurance premiums to maintenance and repair costs. Doing some of your Kia’s regular maintenance yourself can cut down on your garage fees, and changing your oil is a great place to start.
But before you get started, you’ll need to know your Kia Soul’s engine oil capacity, what kind of oil you need, and how often it needs to be changed.

2015 Kia Soul engine oil capacity

So how much oil does your 2015 Kia Soul actually need?
The Kia Soul 1.6L engine has an oil capacity of 3.8 quarts (about 3.6 liters) while the 2.0L engine has an oil capacity of 4.2 quarts (about 4 liters). Engine oil is usually sold in 1 or 5-quart bottles, so while it may be tempting to buy 3 quarts, this is one area where you don’t want to cut corners. Not filling your oil reservoir all the way could lead to decreased performance in your engine, not to mention expensive damage down the road.

What kind of oil does a 2015 Kia Soul need?

There are a lot of engine oil options on the market, but you’ll need to buy one that’s compatible with your Kia Soul. While you can easily use oils that are 5W-20 or 5W-30, Kia recommends ditching the conventional oil and using full synthetic
Why does Kia recommend full synthetic when conventional oil can get the job done? Because full synthetic oil comes with more benefits for your vehicle’s engine. Synthetic oil can:
  • Keep your engine cleaner and free of rust and sludge
  • Last longer between oil changes
  • Resist higher and lower temperatures to reduce engine strain
  • Prevent engine damage

How often to change oil on a 2015 Kia Soul

Once you’ve bought enough engine oil that’s compatible with your 2015 Kia Soul, it’s time to check and see if you need an
oil change
.
Kia recommends changing your oil every 7,500 miles or so, but only if you’ve been using full synthetic oil. If you’re not sure how long it’s been since your last oil change, or you just want to keep an eye on things, the best thing to do is check your oil about once a month.
If your engine oil falls below the fill line, or if it changes to a dark brown or black color, it’s time to change it. You also might notice the oil feels coarse or gritty if you rub it between your fingers, which means it’s dirty and needs to be changed.
Some other signs you’re due for an oil change include:
  • A burning smell, or smokey and oily smells
  • Any changes in your vehicle’s performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

Once your Kia Soul is steady for an oil change, just gather up the tools you need and your new engine oil and replacement filter. You’ll need a filter wrench, a drain pan, and a socket wrench to get the job done.
First, you’ll want to start your vehicle’s engine and let it run until it’s at normal operating temperature. This usually takes about five minutes. Warming up the oil makes it easier for it all to drain out. Once your engine is warm, shut it off and open the hood to find your oil reservoir. Then, follow these steps:
  • Remove the oil fill cap
  • Position your drain pan under the vehicle and remove the oil drain bolt
  • While the old oil is draining, remove the old filter
  • Install the new filter
  • When the oil has completely drained, replace the oil drain bolt
  • Fill your reservoir with new engine oil, checking you’ve added enough using your dipstick
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
Don’t forget to dispose of your old engine oil responsibly! It needs to be poured into a sealed container and taken to a recycling center—don’t pour it on the ground or throw it in the trash!
