Why is my 2013 Audi Q5 backup camera not working?
Unlike later model Audis, the 2013 Q5 doesn’t have problems with its rear camera too often, but they do come up occasionally. When they happen, it’s usually due to a blown fuse, an electrical fault, or a software issue. Most of these can be resolved at home—which should save you some money.
Common backup camera issues for the 2013 Audi Q5
Here are some of the most common reasons the 2013 Audi Q5 backup camera will stop working.
Blown fuse
Most problems with the backup cameras in 2013 Audi Q5s are due to a blown fuse. If your rear camera isn’t working, it’s almost certainly a fuse issue. This could cause the backup assistance display not to appear on your car’s Multi-Media Interface (MMI), the backup display to appear but only show a black screen, or a blurry/distorted image from the camera to appear.
To replace the blown fuse, start by locating the fuse box—it’s behind the panel in your Q5’s trunk. Once you’ve found the fuse box, look for any fuses that are visibly burnt. If you find any, replace them with a new fuse of the same type—that should resolve your backup camera issue.
MMI needs to be reset
Your backup camera also may not work if the MMI needs to be reset. Just like with a PC, the computer that runs the MMI can get bogged down with residual junk data and become glitchy. If this happens, it will need to be reset.
You can reset the MMI by going through the Setting menu and following the prompts. You also can reset it manually by pressing and holding the Setup button, the button on top of the center knob in the control panel, and the button immediately to the right of that knob.
Press and hold all three buttons for a few seconds until you see the MMI screen turn black. When it comes back on, your rear camera should be working again.

Rear camera has been deactivated
It could be that there’s nothing wrong with your backup camera at all—it might have simply been deactivated. It’s fairly easy to inadvertently deactivate the rearview camera’s picture in a Q5—all it takes is pressing the Radio, Navigation, Phone, or Media button at the wrong time.
If this is what’s happened, you can reactivate it by shifting into the Reverse gear twice in rapid succession. You can also reactivate it by turning the parking aid off and then back on again—just press the parking aid button twice.
MMI needs an update
Your 2013 Audi Q5’s backup camera could have outdated software, which would make it stop working. Just like the OS on your computer, your Audi needs periodic software updates to continue working correctly.
Unfortunately, you’re not going to be able to update the software yourself. You’ll have to take it to a certified Audi dealership, and they’ll be able to update your software for you.
Loose connections, faulty wiring, etc.
If you’ve tried the methods listed above, and your backup camera is still not working, then it’s likely that you have some components that are physically damaged.
It could be a short in the wiring, a loose connection, or just a broken camera. Whatever the damaged part ends up being, the result is the same. You’ll need to take your Audi to a mechanic and/or automotive electrician to have the problem resolved.
