Is the GEICO gecko Australian or British?
The GEICO gecko ads crack me up. The gecko sounds very strange, and yesterday, I got into a heated argument with my buddy at work about where the little guy is from. So, to sort the argument out, is the GEICO gecko Australian or British?

GEICO
gecko is probably Australian, but he speaks as if he were British. The gecko is the longest-running GEICO mascot, but he’s technically a Phelsuma—commonly known as a day gecko. Most day geckos inhabit Madagascar and Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, and they also inhabit the tropical region of Australia.
As for the talking mascot voice-over, it has been portrayed by a few actors. Originally Kelsey Grammer, an American actor, lent his voice, followed by Dave Kelly, an English radio presenter. These days, an English actor named Jake Wood has been portraying the GEICO gecko, speaking with an English Cockney accent.
So there you have it: geckos live in Australia, but his accent is definitely British!
