2012 Ford Fusion engine oil capacity

The 2012 Ford Fusion 2.5L has an engine oil capacity of 5.3 quarts or 5 liters
Now, the engine’s oil capacity is not the same as its displacement. Because the 2012 Ford Fusion comes with two different V6 engine options, your displacement will depend on which one you have.
The
SE
and
SEL
trims are powered by a 3.0-liter V6, meaning they have a displacement of 3.0 liters with an engine oil capacity of 6 quarts. The
Fusion Sport
, on the other hand, has 3.5 liters of displacement with a 3.5-liter V6 engine and oil capacity of 5.5 quarts.

What kind of oil does a 2012 Ford Fusion need?

Before you go out and grab the first bottle of oil you see, let's talk about what type of oil your 2012 Ford Fusion actually needs. Your safest bet is to stick to the manufacturer’s recommendation. In the case of the 2012 Fusion, Ford recommends you use Motorcraft® SAE 5W-20 Premium Synthetic Blend Motor Oil.
Why exactly is this particular oil good for your Ford Fusion? It all comes down to the oil’s viscosity—how thick it is—and how it interacts with temperature. For example, for 5W-20 oil, the 5 means that the oil has a low viscosity at 0°F, the W stands for winter, and the 20 tells us that the oil is thin at 212°F.
All in all, this means that the Motorcraft® SAE 5W-20 Premium Synthetic Blend Motor Oil maintains a low viscosity under a wide array of temperatures, preventing further wear and tear on your engine. “Premium Synthetic Blend” means that the oil contains a blend of synthetic and conventional oils to help prevent oxidation.

How often to change the oil on a 2012 Ford Fusion

Ford recommends changing your 2012 Ford Fusion oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. If your Fusion isn’t getting a lot of miles in, you can also change your oil every six months to keep it clean and functional.
The easiest way to ensure your oil gets changed at the right time is to check your oil level regularly. About once a month, pop the hood and check for the following signs it's time for an oil change:
  • Your oil is dark brown or black (Clean oil will be light brown or amber, like a cup of tea. Dirty oil looks more like a cup of soda.)
  • Your engine oil feels coarse or gritty
  • You hear
    unfamiliar noises
    coming from your engine
  • You notice new smells, particularly oil or smoke
  • Changes in your Fusion’s performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

When the time comes to change your oil, the first step is to gather your materials. Make sure you have a drain pan, a socket wrench, and a filter wrench made to remove your old oil filter. You’ll also want to buy a replacement filter and five or six quarts of Motorcraft® SAE 5W-20 Premium Synthetic Blend Motor Oil
Next, run your engine for about five minutes or until it reaches its average operating temperature. You can then shut off the engine, pop the hood, and follow these steps:
  • Take off the oil fill cap
  • Remove the oil drain bolt and washer from under the engine and drain the old oil into your drain pan
  • Take out the old
    oil filter
and let the oil continue to drain
  • Put in the new filter
  • Replace the oil drain bolt with a new washer and tighten it to 29 lb-ft
  • Fill the engine with the new oil and replace the fill cap
Once you’re done, you can use your dipstick to ensure you’ve added the right amount of oil and run the engine for a couple of minutes to watch for leaks. If everything has gone according to play, the
oil pressure light
on your dashboard should turn off.
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
Finally, don’t forget to clean up! Take the dirty oil, place it in a sealed container, and take it to your local recycling center. Don’t dump it on the ground or put it in your garbage bin
