Every bolt or lug pattern indicates the number of bolts on your wheels and the diameter of the circle they form. So in the case of a 2008 BMW 335i, a 5x4.72 bolt pattern means that there are five bolts arranged in a circle 4.72 inches in diameter.

You’ll need more than just the bolt pattern if you’re to change out your wheels, though. Along with the lug pattern, it’s necessary to know your 335i’s wheel size, stud size, offset measurement, center bore measurement, and torque specifications:

Factory wheel size: 17”

Stud size: M12 x 1.5 (12mm stud thread and 1.25mm thread spacing)

Offset: 30-37 (depending on trim level)

Center bore: 72.6mm

Wheel tightening torque: 115 Nm

How to measure your 2008 BMW 335i’s bolt pattern

Of course, you can simply use the specs we just gave you to pick out your next set of wheels, but you can also measure for yourself!

Just grab a measuring tool of your choice—a measuring tape or ruler will do—and head down to your current wheels.

Place your measuring tape or ruler at the outer edge of any of the five bolts and measure to the center of the bolt directly opposite it. Since there are an odd number of bolts on the 2008 BMW 335i, there will be two bolts equally distanced across from your starting bolt.

You can choose either one, just make sure you’re measuring from the outer edge of your starting bolt to the center of the opposite bolt.

Whatever number you end up with is the diameter, or the second value in the bolt pattern.
