2005 Honda Civic engine oil capacity

The amount of engine oil your 2005 Honda Civic needs depends on the engine and model type. Keep in mind that these amounts refer to the oil capacity (how much oil your vehicle needs for each oil change), not engine displacement (the volume that the cylinders take up).
These 2005 Honda Civic engine types need:
  • 3.4 quarts: 1.3-liter and 1.7-liter (LDA1) engines
  • 3.7 quarts: 1.7-liter (D17A2, D17A6, D17A7) engines
If you’re not sure what engine your Honda Civic has, don’t worry—we’ve got your back. The
DX
and
LX
models have a 3.4-quart capacity, while the
EX
’s engine oil capacity is 3.7.

What kind of oil does a 2005 Honda Civic need?

You’re almost ready to go out and buy engine oil—but first, you’ve got to know the best oil for your Civic. For a 2005 Civic, Honda recommends Genuine Honda Engine Motor Oil Synthetic Blend (5W-20). The numbers in the oil grade refer to the oil’s viscosity, or how thick it is.
5W means this oil has low viscosity in cold temperatures and 20 means it’s also thin even in hot temperatures. 5W-20 oil won’t have any problem lubricating your Civic’s engine in cold weather or in hot temperatures.
If you’re not using the premium Honda motor oil, here are some other options:
  • Additional manufacturer recommendations: Signature Series 5W-20 synthetic motor oil or Mobil 1 Extended Performance High Mileage 5W-20 full synthetic motor oil
  • For high-mileage vehicles: Mobil 1 Extended Performance or Mobil 1 High Mileage 5W-20 oil
  • For fuel efficiency: Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 5W-20 engine oil

How often to change the oil on a 2005 Honda Civic

You know how much oil your 2005 Honda Civic needs—and what type to use. So, how do you know when it’s time for an oil change? Honda recommends changing the oil in your 2005 Civic every 5,000 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first. Timely oil changes will help keep your Honda running smoothly and efficiently.
Even though you can go for a while between oil changes, it’s a good idea to check your oil level on a regular basis. You might check the dipstick once a month, or every other time you refuel, for instance. If you notice any of these signs, it’s time for an oil change:
  • Dark brown or black oil (it should be light brown or amber)
  • Oil that feels sandy, gritty, or coarse
  • Strange noises coming from the engine
  • Unpleasant smells, especially anything that smells like oil, smoke, or burning
  • Changes in how your Honda performs

How to change your oil and oil filter

You’ve decided it’s time to change your Honda’s oil, so roll up your sleeves and gather your supplies. You need a socket wrench, drain pan, filter wrench, replacement filter, and five quarts of premium 5W-20 engine oil. It also helps to have plenty of cloth rags handy.
Run your Honda for a few minutes, so it reaches normal operating temperature. Then, turn off the engine, pop the hood, and follow these steps:
  • Set the drain pan under the engine and remove the oil fill cap (which has the oil symbol on it)
  • Use the socket wrench to remove the oil drain bolt and washer
  • Drain the old oil into the drain pan
  • Use the filter wrench to remove and replace the old oil filter
  • Replace the oil drain bolt using a new washer and tighten it to 29 lb-ft (or 33 lb-ft if you have the DX or LX model)
  • Refill the engine with your new oil and replace the fill cap
Let the engine run for a few minutes before you check for leaks. It’s also a good idea to check the dipstick to see if you’ve added enough oil. The oil level should be between the two marks or crosshatches on the dipstick. If it’s not, add more oil and check again.
You’re so close to being finished! Transfer the used oil to a sealed container and take it to your local recycling center. Don’t dump it out on the ground or put it in your trash can. Once you’ve properly cleaned up, pat yourself on the back. You’re all done!
