2011 Hyundai Sonata engine oil capacity

First things first: How much engine oil does a 2011 Hyundai Sonata need?
The 2011 Sonata comes with two engine options: a 2.4-liter inline-4 or a 2.0-liter turbocharged variant. Both engines have an oil capacity of 4.86 quarts or 4.6 liters. Now, the Sonata’s engine oil capacity is different from the engine’s displacement. The oil capacity refers to how much oil you need for an oil change, where the displacement is the 2.4 or 2.0 liters of volume the engine takes up.

What kind of oil does a 2011 Hyundai Sonata need?

Before grabbing the first 5-quart bottle of engine oil you see, it’s worth checking what kind of oil your 2011 Hyundai Sonata needs. Straying from the recommended oil type can damage your engine, so it’s worth the extra few minutes to find the right one. Hyundai recommends using SAE 5W-20 in your 2011 Sonata.
What exactly does that mean? The numbers refer to the oil’s viscosity (its thickness), which impacts the Sonata’s fuel economy and how it operates in different temperatures. The “W” stands for winter.
The 5 right tells us that the oil has a low viscosity at 0°F and the 20 means that it also stays thin at 212°F. SAE stands for the Society of Automotive Engineers—the body that codes oil viscosity.
  • Owner's manual recommendation: To stick to Hyundai’s recommendation for your 2011 Sonata, look for SAE 5W-20.

How often to change oil on a 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Now that you’re an expert on 2011 Hyundai Sonata oil capacity and type let’s talk oil changes!
Hyundai suggests changing your Sonata oil every 7,500 miles. If you’re spending a lot of time on the road or frequently driving in difficult conditions, you should change your oil every 3,700 miles or every six months.
That’s a substantial range! To stay on top of your oil changes, check your oil level once a month or every other refuel. Here are some signs to watch for that indicate it's time for an oil change:
  • New noises
    coming from your engine
  • Motor oil is dark brown or black
  • New smells, particularly oil, smoke, or burning
  • Oil feels coarse or gritty
  • Any changes in your Sonata’s performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

The first step to changing your Sonata engine oil is gathering your materials. You’ll need a drain pan, a socket wrench, and a filter wrench to remove your Sonata’s old oil filter. Don’t forget to purchase five quarts of 5W-20 engine oil and a replacement filter
Begin by running your Sonata’s engine until it reaches normal operating temperature—this should take about five minutes. Now you can shut off the engine, pop the hood, and follow these steps:
  • Take off the oil fill cap
  • Remove your oil drain bolt and washer and drain the old oil into your drain pan
  • Remove the old
    oil filter
while the oil continues to drain
  • Install your new filter
  • Replace the oil drain bolt with a new washer, tightening it to 29 lb-ft
  • Refill your Sonata engine with the new oil and replace your fill cap
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
You can check to make sure you’ve added enough oil using your dipstick. Run the engine for a few minutes, watching for leaks. If everything has gone according to plan, the oil pressure light on your dashboard will turn off.
Now that you’re done, it’s time to clean up. The best way to dispose of your dirty oil is in a container at your local recycling center—not the garbage.
