Why your 2005 Acura TL needs a radio code

Let’s say your
Acura’s
battery dies or becomes disconnected. When you get in the car, your radio unit won’t work until you enter a short numeric code, better known as the radio code. If you don’t have the code, your vehicle’s sound system won’t work.
These codes came onto the car scene as an added level of protection against thieves who may try to steal the stereo component from your car. In the 1990s, stereos were the most frequently stolen car component. Though the resale value of stereos has fallen and the number of stereo thefts has declined by more than 50%, cars are still equipped with this safety feature to deter any would-be thieves.
So what does this mean for you? If you don’t know how to find your Acura TL’s radio code, then you won’t be able to unlock the car’s radio if the battery fails.

How to find your 2005 Acura TL radio code

Fortunately, Acura makes it easy to find the radio code for your model. No matter where you find this code in your car, the radio code is always five digits and listed on a sticker labeled “Anti-Theft Radio Code.” If you discover two series of numbers listed on the sticker, know that the second series of numbers is the radio serial number.
Here are some places to look for your 2005 Acura TL radio code:
  • Open the glove box and check the inside wall for the radio code decal
  • Reference the anti-theft ID card in the owner’s manual or the car’s maintenance journal
  • Look on the door jamb or trunk jamb
  • Look on the underside of the engine compartment fuse box cover

How to look up a 2005 Acura TL radio code

Don’t worry if you still can’t find the radio code! Acura built in some ways to work around this hiccup. All you need is your vehicle identification number (VIN) and the radio serial number to look up your Acura TL’s radio code.
The VIN is a 17-digit numeric code that is unique to your vehicle. Find your VIN by looking at your insurance card or statements, registration paperwork, Acura Financial Services statement, or stamped on the base of the windshield.
Look for the “Anti-Theft Radio Code” sticker on the inside of the glove compartment—you should see a ten-digit number on this decal. This is the radio serial number! If there’s no sticker or code in the glove compartment, look on the radio itself for the ten-digit numeric code. Or, follow these steps to get the code from the radio display:
  • Turn the ignition ON
  • Turn the radio ON—the display should read CODE. If this message doesn’t appear, pull the backup fuse for 1 minute. Then, start again from the beginning
  • Turn the radio device OFF
  • Press and hold the 1 and 6 radio preset buttons and turn the radio device ON
  • Then, you should see a “U” followed by four numbers—these are the first four digits of the serial number
  • The second screen should display an “L” followed by the last four digits of the serial number
  • The serial number is the eight-digit code containing the first four numbers plus the last four numbers—disregard the “U” and the “L”
Once you have the serial number and the VIN, you can do one of the following to retrieve your radio code:
  • Call Acura Customer Service—provide the serial number and VIN to get a new radio code
  • Click
    here
and enter your serial number and VIN to retrieve your radio code
