1999 Ford E-450 V10 engine oil capacity

When looking at the 1999 Ford E-450’s oil capacity, it depends on what engine type yours has. Different vehicles, even within the same
make and model
year, might come with different engines based on their trim level or other configurations.
The Ford E-450 with a 6.8-liter V10 engine has an oil capacity of 6 quarts or 5.7 liters
At first glance, it might be easy to mistake the “6.8 liters” for your engine’s oil capacity, but don’t be fooled! This measurement actually refers to the
engine’s displacement
, which is the total volume taken up by your engine’s cylinders.

What kind of oil does a 1999 Ford E-450 V10 need?

Perhaps even more important than knowing your engine’s oil capacity is knowing what kind of oil it needs. Using the wrong engine oil can leave you with serious (and expensive) engine damage.
If you still have your owner’s manual on hand, you might notice that it says the 1999 Ford E-450 V10 engine requires 5W-30 super-premium motor oil. However, in the years since, Ford has updated that recommendation to 5W-20 motor oil
The “5” refers to the oil’s viscosity or thickness at lower temperatures when the engine isn’t running, while the “20” refers to its viscosity at higher engine operating temperatures.
Ford recommends using Motorcraft as a first pick, but what’s most important is that the oil has the correct viscosity grade and is API certified
  • Ford’s top pick: If you’d prefer to follow Ford’s recommendations, opt for

How often to change oil on a 1999 Ford E-450 V10

Knowing what kind of engine oil your 1999 Ford E-450 needs and how much is one thing—but how often should you get one?
Ford’s general recommendation for changing a 1999 E-450’s oil is every 5,000 miles, but you might need to do so more or less often, depending on factors like your typical driving conditions and what engine oil you’ve been using.
If your E-450 has had to carry a lot of weight on its travels, gets stuck in a lot of stop-and-go traffic, or frequents mountainous or dusty roads, you should expect to need to change your oil more often, while using synthetic versus conventional oil could help extend the distance you can drive before needing an oil change.
Since when you should change your oil can vary pretty widely, it’s a good idea to periodically
check your oil
. Experts recommend doing so about once a month or when refueling your vehicle
If you notice any of these signs, it might be past time to change your 1999 Ford E-450’s oil:
  • Oil is dark brown or black in color
  • Oil has a gritty or grainy texture
  • Very low engine oil level
  • Strange engine noises
  • Smells of burning, smoke, or oil
  • Worsening engine performance
  • Check engine light has come on

How to change your oil and oil filter

Is it time to take care of an
oil change
for your 1999 Ford E-450? In addition to at least 6 quarts of 5W-30 engine oil, some of the items you’ll need include:
  • Socket wrench
  • Filter wrench (tool for removing oil filters)
  • New oil filter
  • New washer for drain bolt
  • Drain pan
  • Gloves
  • Towel(s) for cleanup
Once you have everything you need, it’s time to get started!
You can begin by starting your E-450 V10 engine and letting it run for a few minutes, which warms up the oil, making it thinner and easier to drain. Then, turn the engine off, lift your hood, and head to the front of your vehicle to begin the oil change:
  • Remove the oil fill cap
  • Underneath the vehicle, remove the drain bolt and washer, allowing the oil to empty into the drain pan
  • While the oil continues draining, remove the old oil filter and replace it with the new one
  • Once the oil has stopped draining, replace the drain bolt with a new washer
  • Refill the engine oil to the proper level
  • Replace the oil fill cap
Let your engine run a few more minutes, checking for leaks and ensuring everything is in good working order. After the engine has cooled off, you may want to check the oil level one last time and top it off to the proper level if you need to.
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
You’re not done yet, though! Be sure to properly dispose of your old engine oil—it’s a hazardous material, so don’t just dump it down your drain or throw it out with your regular trash. Many cities have designated drop-off locations where you can dispose of old motor oil, including certain repair shops and car dealerships.
