2007 Kia Spectra engine oil capacity

The first thing you need to know before getting started is: just how much engine oil does a 2007 Kia Spectra need?
The 2.0-liter V4 engine in your 2007 Kia Spectra has an oil capacity of 4.2 quarts or 4 liters. Keep in mind that engine displacement and oil capacity are two different things. We are talking about oil capacity today, meaning how much oil the engine can hold. The 2.0-liter refers to how much volume the cylinders take up. While they seem similar, these numbers are not interchangeable.

What kind of oil does a 2007 Kia Spectra need?

Oil type can make a big difference, and when you look at the motor oil shelf, the options seem endless! Don't buy the cheapest bottle of oil you see, make sure to go with the type that the manufacturer recommends. In this case, Kia recommends SAE 5W-30 Full Synthetic Motor Oil
Let’s break down what this means.
SAE
, or Society of Automotive Engineers International, ensures that the consistency of motor oil stays the same across brands and locations.
The numbers in the oil grade refer to the oil's viscosity or how thick it is. Drivers need to know how the oil will perform in the winter at 0ºF and how it performs at 212°F, one degree above water's boiling point. The "W" stands for winter. The number 10 right before "W" tells us that this oil's got a low viscosity at 0°F, and the 30 means that it's also reasonably thin at a 212°F.
There are three main categories of motor oil: full synthetic, synthetic blend, and conventional. Kia recommends full synthetic, which means there are additives to increase performance and protection. This type tends to cost the most, but it lasts the longest
Going outside of the manufactures recommendation may potentially void warranties, so you will want to be cautious if you plan on using other oil types in your engine.

How often to change oil on a 2007 Kia Spectra

Kia recommends
changing your oil
every 7,000 to 10,000 miles. Keep in mind they assume drivers are using full synthetic oil. If you have chosen to use a synthetic blend or conventional oil, you will need to change the oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. These oils have lower viscosity and will not last as long.
No matter what oil you choose, make checking your oil level and quality part of your
basic routine maintenance
. It can be as easy as checking the dipstick every other time you get gas. Look for these signs:
  • Motor oil that needs changing is dark brown or black (Clean oil is light brown or amber, like a cup of tea. Dirty oil is like a cup of soda)
  • Motor oil feels coarse or gritty
  • New smells, especially anything that smells like oil, smoke, or burning
  • Unfamiliar noises coming from the engine
  • Changes in your vehicle's performance
  • Oil pressure light comes on

How to change your oil and oil filter

Now that you know it is time to change the oil, you will need a few supplies:
  • Five quarts of SAE 5W-30 Full Synthetic Motor Oil
  • Socket wrench
  • Drain pan
  • New washer
  • Filter wrench
  • Replacement filter
First, let your car run for a bit to bring the oil up to the normal operating temperature—it should only take about five minutes. Then pick a level location to do your oil change. Once you're there, shut the engine off, open the hood, and follow these steps:
  • Remove the oil fill cap
  • Get underneath the engine and put the drain pan in place under the engine block
  • Remove the oil drain bolt and washer, allowing the oil to drain into the pan
  • Remove the old oil filter
  • Install the new filter
  • using a new washer
  • Replace the oil drain bolt using a new washer and then tighten it to 29 lb-ft
  • Refill the engine with your new oil and put the fill cap back in place
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
Check the dipstick to ensure you added enough oil, and after letting your engine run for a few minutes, make sure there aren't any leaks
Do Mother Earth a favor—do not attempt to get rid of the oil yourself! The amount of oil from just one oil change can impact over one million gallons of water if disposed of improperly. Instead, put the old oil back into the empty oil containers and bring them to your local recycling center or an auto parts store that collects oil to recycle, like
AutoZone
or
Advanced Auto Parts
.
