Why you should know your Kia’s lug pattern

Your Kia’s lug pattern (or bolt pattern) indicates both the number of lug holes and the spacing between them on your Kia’s wheels.
A lug pattern consists of two numbers: the first indicates the number of lug holes, while the second tells you the diameter of the circle formed by those holes. For example, a 5x5 lug pattern would be a wheel with five lugs that create a 5-inch circle.
If you are changing the tires on your Kia yourself, you will need to know your lug pattern before getting started.

Lug pattern terminology 101

All the terms and numbers above might be a little overwhelming for those new to car maintenance. Thankfully, the whole thing is pretty simple. Here's a breakdown of the key terminology associated with lug patterns.
OEM wheel size: This is the diameter of your Kia’s original wheels (OEM is Original Equipment Manufacturer). You’ll need to match this size if you’re installing new rims.
Lug pattern: Also known as the bolt pattern, it explains how many lug holes there are and the space between them on your wheel.
Offset: The offset of a wheel is the distance between the mounting surface and the center of the rim. A positive offset indicates the wheels are pulled toward the car, while a negative offset means they stick out.
Stud size: Stud size is written as diameters by threads per inch (example: 1/2 x 20). For metric measurements, it is written as stud diameter x distance between threads (example: 14mm x 1.50).
Center bore: This is the opening that centers the wheel on the hub. Again, there are multiple possible center bore sizes, so be sure to know this number.

How to measure your Kia’s lug pattern

If your Kia isn’t listed above, don’t fret! You can measure your Kia’s lug pattern on your own. All you need is a ruler or measuring tape.
First, count the lugs. This will give you the first number of your Kia’s lug pattern.
Next, you’ll need to measure the diameter of the lug pattern. Start at the outer edge of one of the lug holes and measure directly across the circle. For a five-bolt pattern, you’ll need to measure to the center of the nearest lug hole. That’s your diameter.
If the diameter was 4.5 inches and the Kia had five lug holes, that means your lug pattern is 5x4.5.
