background
The Audi A7, BMW 8 Series, and Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class are just a few of the Porsche Panamera competitors to watch out for if you’re looking for a luxury sports car.
When you think of high-class luxury, you think of Porsche—full stop. The 2022 Porsche Panamera is a lively sports car with plenty of acceleration, albeit with a pretty hefty price tag starting at around $89,000.
If you’re considering the Panamera, price likely doesn’t matter to you. But weighing your options should be of the utmost importance.
That’s why

1. Audi A7

Starting price: $70,295
Selling points: Quiet cabin, stylish design
Weak spots: Touchscreen in strange spot, unimpressive V6
The
Audi A7
is as smooth as they come. The cabin is a highlight and the car comes chock-full of top-of-the-line technology. The 335-horsepower turbocharged V6 comes standard with all-wheel drive, making it truly a car to behold.
The A7 goes from zero to 60 in under 5 seconds and takes only 12.1 seconds to get to 100 mph (if that’s something you’re going for). And it’s more affordable if you think the Panamera is too pricey.

2. BMW 8-Series

Starting price: $85,995
Selling points: Smooth on the road, posh interior
Weak spots: Design could be better
When
BMW
set out to build the 8 Series coupe, they did so with the intention to make it the best convertible coupe on offer. The result is a car that is going to turn heads, whether speeding down the highway or parked curbside while you run in to grab a coffee.
The power for this vehicle comes from either a 335-horsepower turbocharged straight-six or a 523-horsepower twin-turbo V8. But no matter what you choose, the ride is impeccable and you’ll be surprised by its agility.
What you won’t get is top-notch gas mileage. The more powerful version gets 17 mpg city and 25 highway, while the less powerful version is slightly better at 23 city and 30 highway

3. Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class

Starting price: $74,000
Selling points: Impressive interior and powertrain
Weak spots: Small trunk space
Practicality takes a back seat to style with this entry into the luxury sedan space. Those driving the
Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class
have plenty of room; those in the rear are sure to be cramped. But it might not matter with such a smooth ride.
Every model also comes with all-wheel drive, which is always a nice-to-have among those who invest their hard-earned money in the 362-horsepower six-cylinder engine
When it comes to speed, the CLS-Class is similar to the Audi A7 (and more expensive to boot). But the CLS-Class has five driving modes—Eco, Comfort, Sport, Sport Plus, and Individual—that allow you to customize the car’s performance however you see fit.

4. Tesla Model S

Starting price: $106,440
Selling points: Faster than it seems, fun to drive
Weak spots: Lackluster cabin, lack of rear space
Even though this is an electric vehicle, it still stands up against the other luxury sports cars on our list thanks to its well-designed interior and sharp exterior. The price is on the high end of the spectrum, though.
The all-wheel-drive
Tesla Model S
boasts a zero to 60 time of—hold onto your hats—a blazing 2.4 seconds. Color us impressed.
The standard model is easy to steer and remains just as agile as any other sports car you care to invest in, with the bonus of incredible range. It gets an estimated 412 miles on a full charge. When you combine that with the look and feel, other cars pale in comparison.

5. Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Starting price: $112,150
Selling points: Like driving an iPhone, lavish
Weak spots: Lack of craftsmanship
The
Mercedes-Benz S-Class
was seemingly built to show off the brand’s high-tech capabilities and high-end interior finishes. It’s truly the ultimate car to drive if you want to relax behind the wheel.
All-wheel drive comes standard with two engines to choose from: a 429-horsepower straight-six or a 496-horsepower V8 that purrs. It’s hard not to break out into a huge smile when driving this luxury sedan because it’s just that good.
What’s more, there is a special “curve” function that allows the car to lean better into corners, which leads to better handling—it’s truly as if you’re hugging the pavement. How cool is that?

6. Cadillac CTS

Starting price: $47,990
Selling points: Fun to drive, potent engine
Weak spots: Small cargo capacity
We thought we would throw in a more affordable option on this list, in case you think the price tags on the other cars are too high.
The
Cadillac CTS
comes from a brand steeped in history, but you’ll find it lacking in luxury for the 2019 model year (the last year it was manufactured). Balanced steering shows up in spades, as does a nice little suspension. But the build quality is lacking and rear-seat space is not great.
Still, if you’re paying almost half of what the competitors on this list cost, maybe you can look past it.
Rear-wheel drive is also standard, which we don’t love. But it would be asking too much to pay less than $50,000 for a luxury car and get all-wheel. That would really be something.

7. BMW M5

Starting price: $105,695
Selling points: Quick off the block, luscious interior
Weak spots: Lack of quality design
If you wanted to compare the
BMW M5
to a roller coaster, we wouldn’t hate it. Driving this Bimmer is like sitting in the front seat of one of the fastest rides ever—except you are steering.
This four-door sedan features a twin-turbo V8 that offers up to 627 horsepower and can accelerate with the best of them. While it might not seem as agile as its peers, it performs like a world-class athlete who is just better than everyone else.
And if you’re taking it on long trips, the rich interior will make you feel like you are relaxing in a world-class library full of books with buttery leather bindings. Yes, it’s that classy.

8. Maserati Quattroporte

Starting price: $97,995
Selling points: Gorgeous on the outside, pretty rare
Weak spots: Sucks up gas
This car was built to stand out, and it does just that. While other cars on this list offer more comfort, the
Maserati
can out-race them all with three engines to choose from: a 345-horsepower standard V6, a 424-horsepower V6, and a top-shelf Trofeo V8 with 580 horsepower.
If you’re after speed, this car’s a dream. The top-of-the-line Trofeo engine, while never tested officially, will likely go from zero to 60 in about 4 seconds. It’s backed up by firm suspension and agile handling that round out its beautiful performance.
This is definitely the snazziest Porsche Panamera competitor! If you decide to make the purchase, you can expect other drivers to check you out.
