If you’re looking for a bit of power behind your luxury SUV, the
BMW X7
might be for you—the base engine on the intro xDrive40i trim is enough power for many: a turbo-six that gets 375 hp. Next up is the M50i with a 4.4-cylinder V8 engine, which gets 523 hp, and at the top of the line is the ALPINA XB7, which boosts that V8 engine to 630 hp. The X7’s standard all-wheel drive and air suspension add an element of grace to how this SUV handles. The style and quality of the interior cabin are exactly what we’ve come to expect from BMW, from the beautiful curved glass dash display to the 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen and ambient interior lighting. If X7 drivers have to sacrifice anything, it’ll be space: although it is a three-row SUV, those in the third row will be cramped. Plus, with all the seats up, the X7 only offers 12.8 cubic feet of cargo space, falling behind the Audi Q7’s 14.2 cubic feet.
2. Cadillac XT6
Starting price: $49,790 to $59,490
Selling points: Plenty of space and technology to keep families content

Cadillac XT6
is one of the only three-row SUVs offered by the brand, and at a starting price of $49,790, it offers an affordable alternative to the Escalade, the other three-row in the line. While you may be sacrificing a bit of space and some more top-of-the-line touches, the XT6 still offers a bang for your buck thanks to its stylish exterior and tech offerings. Drivers can choose between a turbocharged four-cylinder or a V6 engine, which get 237 hp and 310 hp respectively. Both are available with either front- or all-wheel drive. That’s respectable, but those looking for athletic handling may find even the Sport trim a bit lacking, especially when compared to the Q7.
3. Lincoln Aviator
Starting price: $52,975 to $88,520
Selling points: Comfortable, smooth ride paired with a powerful engine
Weak spot: Unimpressive fuel economy
If you’re looking for a more compact option that still seats seven, the
Lincoln Aviator
offers all the benefits of a luxury SUV in a fun-sized package. And Aviator packs some power in its smaller size: a 400-hp twin-turbo V6, which is one of the most impressive you can find in the class. Plus, the Aviator has an option for the more eco-conscious in the form of their available plug-in-hybrid model, the Aviator Grand Touring. When it comes to fuel economy on its other models, though, both the rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive Aviators come in behind the Q7. The rear-wheel drive gets 18 mpg city and 26 mpg highway, while the all-wheel-drive model delivers 17 mpg city and 24 mpg highway.
Ultimately, the Aviator is for those looking for luxury features in a convenient size, but you should opt for the Grand Touring if you want a more eco-friendly approach.
4. Mercedes Benz GLS-Class
Starting price: $78,900 to $103,300
Selling points: Fun to drive, stylish, and full of tech
Weak spot: Lacks personality in exterior styling and some models can be very expensive
Where the Mercedes G-Class prioritizes off-roading, the
GLS-Class
is where you turn when you want a ride that puts plush comfort and high-tech treats first—if you’re ready to shell out the cash. It may not be as large as the Audi Q7 or some of its other competitors, but you can be sure that it maximizes that space for an unforgettable ride. The GLS-Class is decked out with features like heated and ventilated massage seats, a navigation system with augmented reality overlay, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Plus, all three rows are equipped with USB ports.
5. Volvo XC90
Starting price: $51,995 and $72,195
Selling points: Beautiful interior
Weak spot: Bumpy and sometimes loud ride
As one of just a few of Volvo’s SUV offerings, the
XC90
sure does set the bar pretty high. It’s been put on more than one Editors’ Choice list, thanks to its beautiful interior complete with an intuitive touch screen, leather and aluminum trims and touches, and room for families of up to seven. While it doesn’t offer a very sporty ride like the Q7, it does come with a few engine options and a sought-after fuel economy of up to 28 mpg on the highway. In addition to its four-cylinder options, the XC90 also comes with a plug-in powertrain option with 455 horsepower and 36 miles of electric-only range.

Infiniti QX80
falls behind on many lists ranking luxury SUVs, but there is still some appeal to the scrappy model. Those who opt for the base trim, known as the Luxe, can get ample space, heated leather seats, and a 13-speaker Bose stereo system.The standard 5.6-liter V6 is also a plus and can shell out around 400 hp—although, the 5.9-second 0-to-60 time doesn’t exactly lend itself to those looking for a dynamic driving experience. Add on the lower-than-average fuel economy at 14 mpg in the city and 20 mph on the highway, and you get a model that comes up short for most.
7. Porsche Cayenne
Starting price: $70,350 to $110,350
Selling points: Fun to drive, plenty of powertrain options
Weak spot: Costly customizations
The
Porsche Cayenne
only comes with two rows of seating, which might put it out of the running for some larger families who need room for seven or eight. If you don’t need all that room, (and you’re ok with the considerably higher price point), though, the Cayenne is a standout in its class for its myriad of powertrain options, on-the-road agility, and driver-assistance technology. The base engine option is a 355-hp turbo V6, but you can also choose a 434-hp twin-turbo V6 or opt for the GTS with a 460-hp twin-turbo V8. If you’re looking for something more environmentally friendly, the Cayenne offers a 455-hp plug-in hybrid option as well.
8. Genesis GV80
Starting price: $51,295 to $78,295
Selling points: Exciting ride, good fuel economy, and unique take on luxury features
Weak spot: Weighted steering
As one of the most highly-rated vehicles in its class, the
Genesis GV80
gives the Audi Q7 a run for its money. The first of the Genesis SUV line, this model has nearly everything a buyer could want. Even the standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is fun to drive, but the available 3.5-liter V6 boosts the horsepower up to 375 and gets you from 0 to 60 in 5.3 seconds. All models are decked out with luxury finishes like burled-wood trim and ambient lighting. They also include a 14.5-inch touchscreen, heated front seats, and a power liftgate, and you can opt to add even more high-end touches like massaging seats.
