background
You can replace a lost
Florida
driver’s license by submitting proof of ID and paying a $25 replacement fee, as well as a $2 processing fee online through the
MyDMV Portal
or by visiting your local FLHSMV office.
  • To replace your lost ID card, you’ll need to open a Florida DHSMV online account and provide information including your license/license plate number, your date of birth, SSN, and proof of address.
  • You must replace your lost Florida license in person if any of your information has changed or if you used the online services for your last license renewal.
  • Drivers who have had their license stolen are able to get a free replacement if they provide a police report.

Replacing a lost Florida driver’s license online

If you’re looking to replace a lost Florida driver’s license for the first time, you can apply online through the MyDMV portal run by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV).
From there, you can
check your license status
(if you know the ID number) and replace a lost or stolen license.
You may need to provide the following information:
  • Driver’s license number
  • License plate number
  • Full name and date of birth
  • Social security number (SSN)
  • Current address
Keep in mind: You’ll have to pay a $25 replacement fee and a $2 credit card processing fee. After all of the documents and payments are approved, you’ll generally receive your license in the mail in two to three weeks.

Replacing a lost driver’s license in person

The state of Florida requires you to replace your lost driver’s license in person at
your nearest FLHSMV driver license office
if:
  • You’ve had a recent address change or name change (which must also be updated on your
    vehicle registration
and title within 30 days and could incur extra fees)
  • You used the online service the last time you renewed your license.
Generally, for a license replacement, you can expect to need:
  • Proof of identity/U.S. citizenship (e.g., original or certified copies of your birth certificate or passport)
  • Proof of social security number (e.g., your social security card, W-2, or 1099 form)
  • Proof of residential address (e.g., a mortgage statement, utility bill, or car insurance bill)
You can fill out all the necessary paperwork and pay your $25 replacement fee at your local DMV office. You’ll still need to wait a few weeks to receive your license in the mail, but you’ll be issued a temporary license to legally drive in the meantime.

Replacing a lost Florida license while out of state

Florida residents who lose their license while traveling out of state can request a temporary permit from the FLHSMV via email or mail.
A temporary out-of-state permit has an expiration date of 90 days, which will hopefully give you enough time to get to an FLHSMV service center to request your permanent replacement driver’s license.
Keep in mind: If you want to replace your lost Florida driver’s license with a REAL-ID compliant license, you’ll have to go through a separate application process. Check out our guide to the REAL ID process in Florida

Replacing a stolen driver’s license in Florida

Before you do anything, it’s important to report your stolen identification card to local law enforcement. Then take the following steps:
  • Head to your local FLHSMV office to request a new license in person.
  • Bring a copy of the police report with the required documents listed above.
  • The DMV should waive your replacement fee once they’ve verified the police report.
As per Florida law, you’ll receive a temporary paper replacement driver’s license at the DMV which you can use to drive while you wait for your new driver’s license in the mail in a few weeks.
