background
A certified pre-owned Volvo carries a five-year warranty with unlimited miles. If you want more protection, you can upgrade your plan to cover you for up to 10 years.
Volvos are renowned for their safety, but they’re not known for being the most affordable or reliable cars on the market. That’s why opting for a used Volvo can be a great money-saving option. To take the guesswork out of buying used, Volvo offers their Certified by Volvo pre-owned program that includes a multi-point inspection and warranty protection for many of your car’s essential components.

Volvo certified pre-owned (CPO) warranty coverage

The Certified by Volvo pre-owned warranty program essentially extends many of your car’s original bumper-to-bumper warranty guarantees. A new Volvo includes a four-year/50,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty (bumper-to-bumper) warranty, but your Certified by Volvo used vehicle will have an additional year and unlimited miles added to this. If you choose, you can pay to further upgrade this coverage to ten years and unlimited miles.
In other words, at the end of your Volvo’s original warranty, the CPO warranty takes over, adding one more year of coverage with no mileage limits. If you choose, you can pay for up to five additional years of coverage, adding up to ten years and unlimited miles of warranty from your Volvo’s original in-service date.
While your Volvo is under its CPO warranty, you can expect all repairs of defective components or flaws in workmanship to be completed free of charge by Volvo certified and trained technicians using only genuine Volvo parts. The CPO warranty carries no deductible for any services, and it is fully transferable to new owners if you choose to sell your car. If you choose to extend your warranty to ten years, you’ll have the choice to purchase a zero-deductible or $100-deductible plan.
Now, let’s take a look at what’s covered under your Volvo CPO warranty, and what isn’t.

What’s covered

A Certified by Volvo warranty covers the replacement or repair of defective components within the following major vehicle systems:
  • Engine
  • Transmission
  • Drive axle (front and rear)
  • Steering
  • Suspension
  • Brakes
  • Electrical
  • Air conditioning and heating
If you choose to purchase the VIP Platinum contract, extending your warranty to ten years, you’ll also have the added benefits of:
  • Tow coverage for up to $100 per incident
  • Rental car reimbursement up to $100 per day and $500 per incident
  • Trip interruption to reimburse for expenses associated with breakdowns occurring over 100 miles from home

What isn’t covered

A Volvo CPO warranty shouldn’t be confused with an extended vehicle warranty or service contract. There are a lot of parts and some systems that aren’t covered, including:
  • Tires and wheel alignment
  • Exhaust system
  • Interior elements such as light bulbs and carpeting
  • Basic maintenance
  • Wear and tear items
  • Damage caused by misuse or neglect

Additional benefits

A Volvo CPO warranty does more than just cover major component repairs. It also offers the following added incentives:
  • 24/7/365 Volvo Roadside Assistance
  • 1-year subscription to Volvo Cars app
  • CARFAX Vehicle History Report with Buyback Guarantee
  • 3-months complimentary Sirius XM radio

Is a Volvo CPO warranty transferable?

Yes. The Volvo CPO warranty is fully transferable, as are any purchased upgrades. That means your warranty coverage can increase your car’s resale value, and at no cost to you since there’s no charge to transfer a Volvo CPO warranty.

Volvo CPO program certification process

You might be thinking that all it takes for a vehicle to enter the Certified by Volvo warranty program is for it to be sold by a Volvo dealership. Well, it takes more than just that—a lot more.
To qualify for a Volvo CPO warranty, the vehicle must pass a comprehensive inspection covering more than 170 points, inside and out, including:
  • Exterior panels, glass, lights, grilles, bumpers, and frame
  • Interior systems and amenities
  • Powertrain
  • Key safety features, such as brakes, airbags, seatbelts, tires, wheels, and more
  • Advanced safety feature inspection
In addition to this multi-point inspection, technicians will pull the vehicle history report to review maintenance and repair history, then subject the vehicle to a rigorous road test. If the vehicle fails any part of this inspection, it can still be sold, but not as a Certified by Volvo vehicle.
So that means that when you buy a Certified by Volvo used vehicle, you can be certain you won’t drive off the lot in a lemon. You’re also guaranteed to have most major component repairs covered, free of charge, should something go wrong between your purchase and the warranty expiration.

Are Volvos reliable?

Volvos may be famous for safety, but we can’t say the same for their reliability. J.D. Power ranks Volvo 30th out of 32 brands in their
2022 dependability study
citing 256 reported problems per 100 vehicles compared to the industry average of 192 per 100 vehicles.
Volvo fared a bit better in RepairPal.com’s rankings, taking the #17 spot out of 32 car brands with an average overall reliability rating of 3.5 out of 5. This is thanks in part to higher reliability ratings for some Volvos. The XC60 SUV, for example, earns an above-average 4 out of 5 from RepairPal, as does the S80 sedan.

Average Volvo repair costs

So, just how much can you expect to pay for repairs on a Volvo if it’s not under warranty?
According to RepairPal, Volvo owners spend an average of $769 per year on repairs. While this isn’t far over the industry average of $652, it’s still considerably more than most of us want to pay for repairs on a vehicle we just purchased—used or not. A CPO warranty on your new-to-you Volvo may not cover every repair included in RepairPal’s estimate, but it could offer substantial savings.
For example, your Volvo CPO warranty covers not only expensive components like your engine and transmission but also your car’s suspension, which many people overlook when it comes to categorizing expensive repairs. A Volvo strut assembly replacement can cost anywhere from $700 to over $5000, which would be covered by your CPO warranty.

Our take: is a Volvo CPO warranty worth it?

Considering the cost of repairs for a Volvo and the automaker’s spotty reputation for reliability, a Volvo CPO warranty is worth it. Plus, if you plan to keep your new-to-you Volvo until it’s more than five years old, a VIP Platinum contract to extend your warranty up to ten years and unlimited miles is certainly worth your consideration.

How to save on Volvo insurance costs

This app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍
