background
GEICO only offers vehicle storage insurance coverage to deployed military members. However, all other policyholders can customize their coverage or leverage GEICO’s DriveEasy App to emulate similar benefits.
No doubt, the men and women from all branches of the United States military deserve the insurance premium discount that comes with vehicle storage coverage. Especially when they are called to service at a moment's notice.
However, there are plenty of situations where non-military policyholders could also benefit from this type of
car insurance
coverage. Even though it's not technically available to them, there are plenty of other savings strategies to substitute.

What is GEICO vehicle storage insurance coverage?

A
GEICO Storage Protection Plan
is only available to military members who have been called to deployment for 30 or more days. GEICO will suspend or reduce the insurance costs of the service member’s vehicle while they are away protecting our country.
However, what if you’re a college student leaving your car at home for the semester? What if you just bought a new car and you’re storing your old car until you can sell it?
Technically speaking, there is no such thing as vehicle storage coverage or parked car insurance for everyday policyholders. But luckily, there are alternative ways to save while your vehicle is on the sidelines:
  • GEICO DriveEasy App
: This telematics program tracks your driving to ensure you are practicing safe habits. If you’re not driving and your car is just sitting in storage, GEICO could offer you the maximum 25% discount.
  • Comprehensive coverage
: Reducing your coverage to just comprehensive insurance will lower your costs while providing all the necessary protection (more on this next).
  • Raise your deductible
: Raising your deductible will lower your auto insurance rate. As long as you don’t need to file a claim, this is an easy way to save on a vehicle in storage. Still, in case of an emergency, make sure you choose a deductible you would be able to pay.
  • Cancel your auto insurance policy
: If you are confident in the safety and security of your vehicle’s storage location, you can choose to cancel all of your car insurance coverage.

Why do you need car insurance for a vehicle in storage?

Legally speaking, you don’t need car insurance if your vehicle is stored on private property and is not being driven. Since it serves no risk to other drivers, there’s no need for it to hold a
liability insurance policy
.
However, insurance requirements vary by state—you may be required to have coverage in order to renew your annual registration or to store your vehicle on public roads. Insurance companies may also require you to have some level of protection if your stored vehicle still has an outstanding auto loan.

What does car storage insurance cover?

Not all damage to your vehicle necessarily occurs within the lines of the road. While in storage, your car could still be threatened by thieves, vandalism, severe weather, animal intruders, and more.
Deployed military members can use the GEICO Storage Protection Plan to protect their vehicles from these dangers. However, if the military member is not deployed or the policyholder is non-military, a
comprehensive-only insurance policy
will be needed to provide protection.

How much does GEICO’s Storage Protection Plan cost?

GEICO’s Storage Protection Plan for deployed military members offers insurance coverage for a reduced rate—GEICO doesn’t provide exact numbers.
All other policyholders will have the choice to drop bodily injury liability coverage, collision coverage, personal injury protection, and other unnecessary coverage options from their policy if they are putting their vehicle in storage.
By reducing your coverage to a comprehensive-only policy with GEICO, you can expect to pay an average of $134 per year. But this amount can vary based on vehicle type and storage location.

How to add storage insurance to your car insurance policy

Military members heading out for deployment can contact GEICO’s Military Center at 1-800-MILITARY (645-4827) for more information on the Storage Protection Plan. All other policyholders should discuss storage options with their local GEICO insurance agent.

FAQs

Military members can store their cars under GEICO’s Storage Protection Plan for as long as they are deployed (minimum of 30 days).
All other policyholders don’t technically have a dedicated storage insurance option. Still, you can reduce your policy to comprehensive-only (or no insurance at all) for as long as your vehicle is not on the road.
While there is technically no such thing as “vehicle storage insurance” for everyday policyholders, there are ways to lower your insurance costs while your vehicle is in storage and not exposed to the traditional risks of the road.
