Assurance America: Great for drivers with violations

Overall Jerry rating in Florida: 4.7
JD Power customer satisfaction: Not rated for Florida market

NAIC complaint index (June 2023): N/A
Assurance America specializes in insurance for drivers who have trouble finding affordable rates due to previous traffic violations, like a DUI or a high number of speeding tickets. Their insurance premiums are a little above average but cheaper compared to other companies when it comes to things like an SR-22 option.
Assurance America only operates in 10 states, which can mean shopping for a new company if you move, but they are a solid, no-frills choice. They have a lower-than-average claims processing rating, which could partially be due to specializing in high-risk drivers and a larger influx of claims, but they still get solid reviews for customer service.

Kemper: Good for drivers with violations
Real 5-star customer review:
Great and affordable!
Thank you for giving me hope that affordable insurance still exists! I have been recommending Kemper to all my friends and family!! Thanks again! -Juan
Overall Jerry rating in Florida: 4.7
JD Power customer satisfaction: Not rated for Florida market

NAIC complaint index (June 2023): A little above average
Description: Kemper has options for drivers who might struggle to find affordable insurance if they don’t have a clean driving record, plus they have a range of other forms of insurance. They cost a little more than average, but that is typical of non-standard auto coverage, and they give you a good option if your situation is more complicated.
If you want to bundle your auto and home/renter’s/mobile home insurance options, they have more flexibility when it comes to coverage. And since it’s becoming harder to find insurance for housing in Flordia, that only works in their favor. Our Florida survey participants gave them average ratings for customer service and claims processing, so they neither stand out nor fall behind.

AM Best financial strength: A+
NAIC complaint index (June 2023): More than expected
Esurance offers standard coverage, with a decent range of options, though they have fewer discounts available. Their insurance aims to serve the average customer. They use technology to their advantage, and you’ll be able to do a lot online as a customer.
Esurance does have lower-than-average ratings for the claims process and a higher-than-average number of customer complaints for the company's size, but solid ratings otherwise. If you want pretty standard insurance and love tech-friendly options, take a closer look at Esurance.

National General: Non-standard insurance for high-risk drivers
Real 5-star customer review:
National General was willing to take me on despite a couple of minor infractions and were SO much less than other companies auto insurance policies were. They also helped me when I needed to change my payment dates unexpectedly. -Jessica
Overall Jerry rating in Florida: 4.6
JD Power customer satisfaction: Not rated for Florida market
AM Best financial strength: A+
NAIC complaint index (June 2023): More than expected
National General offers options for drivers with traffic violations, and they do have additional coverage options so you can add extras to your policy. They offer multiple discounts and get decent ratings. However, they also have a higher rate of complaints, so it’s mixed.
If you want a lot of options for customizing an insurance policy or need coverage with a less-than-perfect driving record, consider National General.

How to save on your Florida auto insurance

There isn’t one specific insurance provider that has the most affordable coverage for everyone. Factors like what vehicle you drive, where you live, your age, your driving history, and the coverage requirements make a difference in car insurance rates.
Don’t jump at the first option you find—instead, you want to get quotes from a minimum of 3 to 5 insurance providers before picking a new policy. Fortunately, Jerry’s
insurance comparison app
does a lot of the heavy lifting for you, comparing over 50 top national brands so you can find the best rates.
You can also ask your insurance agent about possible discounts, such as bundling both homeowners or renters and auto insurance policies, a good student discount, or taking part in a telematics program. Florida has a higher-than-average number of car accidents, so you don’t want to focus on getting the cheapest option.

Upgrading your coverage can save you in the long run

By only purchasing the bare minimum of coverage required by Florida, you can reduce the cost of your auto insurance, but you risk being left with a lot of unpaid bills if you get into a major accident.
It's nearly always a good idea to raise your liability coverage limits, and if you drive a newer vehicle, adding comprehensive coverage, collision coverage, or personal injury protection to your policy will give you the best options for a full coverage policy.
You might want to add optional coverage like the ones below for even more protection:
Since Florida is a no-fault state when it comes to insurance laws, you are expected to carry
personal injury protection (PIP)
, but you still might consider upping your amount since it helps pay for your medical expenses after an accident.
Methodology:
Jerry’s content editors analyzed 20 of the top insurers in Florida and chose the best ones based on a combination of scores from JD Power, AM Best, NAIC, and Jerry’s own nationwide carrier survey.
