The most common 2019 Chevrolet Equinox problems

Let’s start with the honest truth—most cars get a recall or two, so the 2019 Equinox’s four total recalls aren’t necessarily abnormal. That said, this crossover isn’t nearly as reliable as something like a
Honda CR-V
or
Toyota RAV4
. Still, it has a lot going for it: a standard turbocharged engine, optional all-wheel drive, and stiff suspension for a sporty ride.
But that doesn’t completely negate the 2019 Chevrolet Equinox’s recalls. Let’s take a look at the four recalls for the 2019 Equinox below.

Start/stop accumulator

The 2019 Equinox was recalled for missing bolts on the start/stop accumulator, which could lead to a transmission oil leak. A leak in your transmission oil could eventually lead to a propulsion loss, upping your chances for a crash. Not only that, the leak increases the risk of engine fire

Fuel tank

Next up is an improperly sealed seam on the fuel tank, which can lead to fuel leaks and an increased risk of engine fire. Chevy recalled some all-wheel drive Equinox models for 2019-2020 because of this issue.

Head restraints

Chevy recalled certain 2019-2020 Equinox models for an insufficient weld on the right-rear headrest. The insufficient weld would mean that in the event of a crash, a passenger in the rear-right seat would not be properly restrained and supported, and could acquire a significant head or neck injury.

Rear brakes

Chevrolet found insufficient coating on the rear brake caliper pistons for certain 2018-2019 Equinoxes. The improper coating could lead to the formation of gas pockets, which has the potential to reduce the rear brake performance, which can in turn increase the likelihood of a crash.
These are the four recalls for the 2019 Equinox, but does the car see any other common problems? We looked at what customers had to say, and here are some of the most common complaints:
  • Poor vehicle stability
  • Interior materials feel poor quality
  • Camera system experiences intermittent outages
  • Display screen freezes
While some of these minor issues are matters of taste and convenience, the Equinox’s recalls could pose serious danger to drivers. If you plan to buy a used 2019 Equinox, make sure to verify whether the model you plan to purchase is included in any of the recalls—and if so, don’t purchase unless it has been properly fixed.

Is the 2019 Chevrolet Equinox reliable?

The 2019 Equinox isn’t horrible when it comes to reliability, but the fact of the matter is there are many crossovers out there that are more reliable, including the Honda CR-V,
Subaru Crosstrek
, or
Mazda 5
The 2019 Equinox earned a 3.5/5 rating from RepairPal and an 86/100 score from J.D. Powers for reliability and quality. But you should also know the cost of keeping an Equinox in decent shape—the average annual repair cost for the 2019 model is $605
