The 2014 Nissan Sentra may be known as a generally reliable vehicle, but it also has a dark side. Despite its four-start safety rating, the 2014 Sentra has five recalls with a whopping 327 customer complaints to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Let’s start with the recalls. Nissan issued five different recalls from 2014 to 2017—all of which involved a faulty OCS (Occupant Classification System) and the front passenger airbag. The OCS includes sensors that detect when a seat is occupied, which controls airbag deployment. All of these recalls warned that the passenger airbag may not be deployed if the OCS did not detect an adult occupant in the seat.

Now to the 327 customer complaints. A large percentage of these did involve issues with the airbags, but over half of the complaints were about the Sentra’s powertrain—a failing transmission, to be exact. Countless drivers report the Sentra’s CVT transmission frequently slipped and spontaneously failed, causing total breakdowns and costly repairs.

Nissan was reportedly aware of this common issue despite never issuing a recall.

That’s not where the Sentra’s issues end, though. Other top complaints include failing or malfunctioning service brakes, electrical components, and the accelerator. There are also several reports of 2014 Sentras spontaneously catching fire!

Needless to say, all of these issues present a decent amount of risk to drivers and passengers, so if you notice anything abnormal on your 2014 Sentra, you should head straight to the mechanic.
