Did you know
used car
prices are up 40% from last year? If you’ve been browsing the used car market and struggling to find anything within your price range,
inflated prices
could be why.
With used car prices so high, you can’t afford to spend on a car that won’t go the distance. Still, there are some good, reliable brands out there that will get you to 200,000 miles or more.
Let car insurance and ownership super app Jerry guide you through some of the most reliable used car brands according to
Consumer Reports
(CR).
Read on and you might just find another way to save (hint: Jerry users save an average of over $800 a year on their car insurance plans!).

Which used car brands are most reliable?

CR compiled 10 car brands popular for used vehicles and ranked them according to reliability scores from the 2012 model lineup. Reliability scores are based on consumer-reported data on how the cars hold up over time.
A model from a more reliable brand will not only get the best mileage over time, but it will get there with the fewest amount of repairs along the way.
Of the 10 brands selected, the top five scorers are Lexus (93), Toyota (86), Acura (79), Honda (70), and Nissan (67).
The bottom three are Subaru (50), Mercedes-Benz (47), and GMC (42.) Rounding out the middle are Mazda (66), and Volvo (54).
It’s not surprising to see Lexus and Toyota at the top of the list, as the Japanese brand and its luxury offshoot have a longstanding
reputation for reliability.

In addition to being one of the most ubiquitous brands on the market,
Honda
and its luxury subsidiary Acura are also consistently two of the best-rated, most affordable, and most sought-after used car brands to buy.

What is the best model to get?

If you’re willing to pay a little more and spring for a used Lexus, CR recommends the CT 200h. The sporty hybrid got a redesign for the 2011-2017 model years, and the average retail price for a 2012 Lexus CT 200h is just $13,850 - $14,150. When buying a used car, a hybrid the like CT 200h will guarantee that you’ll still get great fuel economy even when going for an older model.
The top pick for Toyota’s 2012 lineup is also a hybrid—the Toyota Prius C. 2012 was a redesign year for the Prius C as well, and you can snag one for an average retail price of $10,550.
CR recommends the
2012 Acura TSX
and the 2012 Honda Civic for its third and fourth picks for the best-of model year. The 2012 TSX goes for about $12,050 - $14,100, while the 2012 Civic has an average retail price range of $9,325 - $13,575.
If you decide to go with a 2012 Nissan model, keep an eye out for the Nissan Altima. With an average retail price range of $7,150 - $9,325, it’s the most affordable buy in the top five.
