Supercar-Founder Makes Hilarious Admission About the C8 Chevy Corvette

Koenigsegg isn’t the same kind of automaker as General Motors, but that didn’t stop its founder from praising the C8 Chevy Corvette.

background
Supercar
makers have a reputation for being pretty exclusive and pretentious. The decades-long tiff between Ferrari and Lamborghini is a testament to that. But Christian von Koenigsegg is apparently not above complimenting mass-market automakers.
In a recent interview, the Koenigsegg founder heaped praise on General Motors’ recent inclusion in the mid-engine sports car segment, the C8 Chevy Corvette.

The Chevy Corvette’s “bang for your buck”

The Drive’s Peter Holderith caught up with Christian von Koenigsegg at this year’s Monterey Car Week, and in the conversation, the Swedish supercar founder talked at length about how impressed he was with the most recent rendition of the Chevy Corvette.
The latest Vette seemed like a steal of a deal to Koenigsegg, who admitted he was relieved to find that his company’s models could still outpace the $60,000 car.
The Corvette’s Z51 performance trim can hit 60 mph in 2.9 seconds. The most affordable Koenigsegg—the Gemera—can do it in 1.9 seconds. But it’s hard to argue that the extra speed is worth the $1.1 million price difference.
Koenigsegg said the level of performance Chevy can offer for five figures price is “mind-blowing” and applauded the value GM is giving its customers in the sports car.

More separates the C8 Chevy Corvette from a Koenigsegg than track times

Holderith’s conversation with Koenigsegg eventually highlighted why the C8 Chevy Corvette can coexist with a Koenigsegg Gemera in a competitive sports car market. But the highlight actually came from a shared struggle rather than a difference.
While both companies serve vastly different clientele, they both had to deal with commodity and supply chain struggles making it difficult to keep up with demand.
That said, the way these issues affect each business turns out to be very different. While semiconductor shortages cripple Chevy’s ability to deliver the thousands of Corvettes they hope to make, Koenigsegg intentionally keeps production numbers low to keep their cars rare.
Koenigsegg’s commitment to top-quality components and painstaking assembly, coupled with their limited unit numbers, makes their supercars' prized possessions worth millions.

Another thing separating these two sports cars: car insurance

High-performance sports cars are never cheap to insure, and these two cars are no different. But their different values create contrast in how they’re covered.
The mass production of the C8 Chevy Corvette makes a tough sell for collector car status. That means buyers will have to wait up to 25 years before the car qualifies for classic car coverage. A Koenigsegg Gemera is more likely to qualify for a policy based on agreed value right away.
