The $134,000 Shelby Mustang Super Snake Isn't the Fastest Mustang Anymore

Last year’s Shelby Mustang Super Snake might have the aura of a supercar, but at the track, it can’t keep up with the 2022 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500.

When the Shelby Mustang Super Snake was revealed in 2021, it had a lot of car enthusiasts salivating. Mustang fans are used to getting excited about any model sporting Carroll Shelby’s name, but the Super Snake brought the pony car into supercar territory.
With its 5.0-liter Coyote V8 and Whipple supercharger, the Super Snake could reach 60 mph in 3.5 seconds, faster than any of its predecessors. But the Super Snake’s moment at the head of the pack didn’t last long.
The 2022
Ford
Mustang Shelby GT500, which costs $55,400 less than the Super Snake, dropped the 0-60 numbers by a tenth of a second.

took a closer look to understand how this year’s model outpaced its serpentine ancestor.

The Mustang Super Snake looks better, on paper

One look at the specs of these two cars, and you’d expect the one from the tuning house to be the faster model.
The Whipple supercharger gives the Shelby Mustang 825 horsepower—65 more than its Ford-built rival. A manual transmission is also available, an option the new GT500 lacks.
But on the track, it was the GT500 that came out on top. It’s difficult to say why the GT500 accelerates faster than the Super Snake. Both cars look and weigh the same. But one detail could be the thing that makes the difference.
The Super Snake comes with Ford’s Performance Package which includes 20-inch aluminum wheels and track tires. Adding the same upgrade to the GT500 bumps its 0-60 time up to 3.6 seconds.

If it packs less punch, why does the Mustang Super Snake cost so much more?

The specs list of these two Mustangs is pretty similar, and so the real lead to this story is the price difference. Why would drivers spend over $134,000 for a car they can get for under $80,000?
The answer boils down to exclusivity. The Super Snake is built by Shelby American, the legendary tuning house founded by Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon’s character in Ford vs. Ferrari). It was built in honor of the man’s 98th birthday and only 98 of them were produced.
The 2022 Ford Mustang GT500, on the other hand, is built in Ford’s assembly line like all the other vehicles in the auto giant’s lineup. The sports car is still in production, but if unit numbers reach a similar place as last year’s model, the company will probably make more than 4,000 of them.
