The One of a Kind BAC Mono R

The BAC Mono R is a limited-release luxury single-seat roadster. While it is comparable to the new BAC Mono, it otherwise lacks competition.

background
When people think of
luxury cars
they think of powerful Corvettes and tech-loaded Mercedes Benzes. While these vehicles can be exceptionally fast, their higher weight classes hold them back from their true potential. That's why the world of single-seat luxury roadsters is growing, as we've seen with the BAC Mono.
First released in 2011, this sprightly street-legal speed demon has recently been modified with more minimalism and a meaner body style. According to
MotorTrend
, the new Mono actually bases its design changes on the BAC Mono R variant.
Here's why you shouldn't sleep on that unique hypercar.

When was the BAC Mono R released?

BAC, also known as Briggs Automotive Company, debuted the Mono R at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed. The body style was obviously different from the BAC Mono with its sharper angles and reduced curb weight.
The mirrors were relocated to twin struts, the side pods were modified for optimum cooling, and the overall body is longer. The BAC Mono R has over 40 new carbon fiber parts with some titanium and magnesium components.
The BAC Mono R has 35 extra ponies compared to the BAC Mono, now rated at 340 horsepower. Combined with its 1,225-pound frame, that's an output of approximately 136 horsepower per liter. That's higher than the 4.5-liter V8 engine used inside certain Ferrari models!
Carbuzz
tells us that the BAC Mono R's handling has also been improved thanks to numerous structural enhancements. The battery rests in the center of the roadster, giving it a lower center of gravity.
The suspension has also been refined to produce less noise compared to the standard BAC Mono. The Mono R's official top speed is 170 mph, with a 0-60 time of 2.5 seconds.

Is the new BAC Mono a better roadster?

When it comes to exterior design, the two Mono roadsters are practically identical. The new BAC Mono carries an extra 57 pounds, but its 0-60 time still sits at an impressive 2.7 seconds. Engine output is nearly identical to the Mono R's at 332 horsepower (a 32-horsepower improvement from the outgoing Mono).
One area where the two also differ is availability. Only 30 BAC Mono R units were produced, and reservations sold out instantly. More people can order a new BAC Mono, but it has a steep asking price of $212,000.

The BAC Mono R doesn't have much outside competition

The BAC Mono R is mostly in a class of its own, though you could compare it to the De Tomaso P72.
This single-seater looks more like a miniature sports car than a roadster, equipped with a supercharged V8 and a six-speed manual gearbox. However, with its $850,000 price tag, only the most affluent buyers will be able to have one.
The Ariel Atom 3S roadster comes with a new turbocharged engine, capable of 365 horsepower. It's priced at nearly $96,000, making it more affordable than the BAC Mono R.
However, some video reviews have shown that it doesn't always stay planted on the road, despite its heavier frame. The BAC Mono R has no problem keeping its wheels to the pavement, even as you're pinned back to your seat during acceleration.
If you're ever behind the wheel of a BAC Mono R, the temptation to test its full potential is real. Before you head out to the track, it's best to protect yourself with a good insurance plan. A vehicle as expensive as the BAC Mono R can rack up some high repair bills!
