At almost 50 years old, Star Wars remains as enchanting as ever. Some swoon over John Williams’s spectacular score, others live for the detailed world-building, and a few honestly just can’t get enough of that bananas cantina scene.
Whether you love it or hate it, it cannot be denied—the cultural reach of Star Wars is unmatched.
In the Star Wars universe, lots of creatures have lots of places to go, and they get there in an enormous variety of ways. Here, we go through a few iconic vehicles
from the franchise that has us all humming “The Imperial Death March” in perpetuity. The giants and the walkers
As there are literally hundreds of vehicles to choose from, we took a note from the editorial team at StarWars.com
, who curated a few of their favorites. First up—the giants, the walkers, and the combinations thereof. Most famously the brief prison of C-3PO and R2-D2 before they are rescued by Luke Skywalker, Sandcrawlers are giant mobile scrap collectors. The nomad Jawa clans use them as shelters and as command centers for their scavenging operations.
Sandcrawlers are big and trapezoidal, and they roll along on continuous track wheels, like tractors. Somehow incredibly intimidating.
Sandcrawlers don’t technically “crawl,” but All Terrain Tactical Enforcers (AT-TEs) do. Or rather—they march along. Used by the Galactic Republic throughout the Clone Wars, AT-TEs have six legs and are covered in weapons of all shapes and sizes.
These tanks are big, scary, and likely full of enemies. You certainly wouldn’t want to see an army of them marching toward you.
Speaking of stuff you’d rather avoid, let’s add the all-terrain armored transport (AT-AT) to the list. These four-legged tanks are among the Empire’s most preferred vehicles/weapons. AT-ATs are several stories high and look like long-legged parodies of dogs.
In an AT-AT, an Imperial Army commander perches in what would be the dog’s head, coolly blasting at Rebels and stomping anyone in their way. Somebody warn the mailman.
Cool stuff that flies around
Any Star Wars fan knows that it’s the flying and the floating that really inspires awe, so let’s take a look at some of these gravity-defiers.
The Snowspeeder, a nimble aircraft piloted by Rebels, is best suited for icy landscapes. In shape not unlike a Crunchwrap Supreme®, it’s light, quick, and typically the David to an AT-AT’s Goliath. Beware, Imperial forces.
A cousin of warmer climes, the Landspeeder shares its speed and agility with the Snowspeeder. But the Landspeeder does not fly high—in fact, it floats just above the ground, like a car with invisible wheels.
Drivers climb in and gun it to their destination, where they park in mid-air.
These vehicles are among the most commonly used throughout the Star Wars-verse. Tatooine’s Toyota Corolla.
Finally, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the oh-so-fun podracer. The stars of the opening scene of “The Phantom Menace,” these flying vehicles sport tiny open-air cockpits and twin engines.
Podracers are blisteringly fast, super agile, and irresistible to Rebels and Imperialists alike. May the mass times acceleration be with you.
