background
Mitsubishi Motors has announced the 2023 Colt as a product of its partnership with Renault. That's exciting news, considering the car hasn't been on the market for almost a decade. The last model of the previous generation was manufactured in 2014.
The 2023 Colt returns in time to mark its 60th Anniversary since the Colt 600 made its market debut in 1962, one of the memorable
classic cars
of the ‘60s.
However, the 2023 Colt is intended for the European market. With its production, Mitsubishi hopes to extend its hybrid vehicles in Europe.

Understanding the Mitsubishi-Renault "2023 Colt" Partnership

The partnership between Mitsubishi and Renault was announced in 2021. It came after the former had already confirmed in 2020 that it would cease car production for the European market.
Renault has previously partnered with Nissan, building the Micra small car and Pickup in France and Spain over the last decade.
In an article featured on
Auto News
, Mitsubishi said, "Producing the 2023 Colt will allow us to expand our niche in core European markets."
It also confirmed that it would focus on specific countries, including Spain, France, Germany, and Italy. These are markets in which Mitsubishi's previous models have excelled.
The new 2023 Colt will join the ASX small SUV – announced in January - as the second model from the Japanese automaker since its revamped European expansion. Renault will manufacture it in Turkey, while the ASX's production takes place in Valladolid, Spain. Mitsubishi sold 63,122 models in Europe in 2021, a 27% decrease from 2020.

Features, design, and specs of the 2023 Mitsubishi Colt

Mitsubishi has concealed many of the details about the 2023 Colt's features and specs.
However, its teaser images released on April 5th revealed a small, five-door, subcompact hatchback with a curved front end. The newly announced Colt features "hidden" tailgate handles fitted near the C-pillar.
According to
Motor 1
, the 2023 Colt will be built on the Mitsubishi-Renault-Nissan partnership's CMF-B platform. Mitsubishi revealed that the Colt will feature hybrid powertrains, but it didn't share additional insights about the power and torque output and the transmission system. However, it is highly likely to be a naturally aspirated 1.6-liter gasoline engine.
The engine will work together with the electric motor to deliver a combined 140hp and an acceleration of 0-60 mph in 9.9 seconds to a top speed of 112 mph. A 6-speed automatic transmission system will transfer that power to the wheels.
The car's price is yet to be announced but is expected to cost about £20,000.

What car is the 2023 Colt comparable to?

As mentioned before, Mitsubishi and Renault will build the 2023 Colt on a CMF-B platform, which means the car will look similar to the Renault Clio E-Tech hybrid. The latter is manufactured in Bursa, Turkey and Novo Mesto, Slovenia.
The old 2004-2014 Colt was built in Mitsubishi's Nedcar manufacturing facility in Born, The Netherlands. Over 400,000 models were sold.
The Colt's powertrain specs and features mentioned above are all based on the Clio E-Tech HPEV. Once it enters the market, it will join Mitsubishi Motor's hybrid plug-in lineup, including the ASX and Eclipse Cross SUVs built in Asia.
Nonetheless, since last year, the car company has phased out the Outlander mid-sized HPEV SUV.
